The flat and fast Prestwold Hall circuit in Loughborough hosted the 2012 British Elite Duathlon Championships this morning.

In our preview piece I highlighted defending champion Mark Buckingham as race favourite with with former podium finisher Matthew Gunby "expected to be challenging Mark for top spot on the podium". Well, that proved to be spot on the mark, with Richard Horton (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) taking the bronze and with it, the British Junior Championship title. It's no surprise to see that Mark sealed the win with the fastest final run split.

Of the ladies race I said, in the absence of Katie Hewison, that the race was wide open, spotlighting long distance specialist Lucy Gossage as one to watch. Right again, but this time while Lucy pulled away from Rachel Bamford on the final run, she did it to secure victory by a huge, relatively, margin of one minute. Third placed George Schwiening was the first Junior finisher...but I forecast that one too.

The favourite for the Youth male title duly delivered too, the impressive Miles Burton retaining his British Championship. Can he complete another du/tri/aquathlon clean sweep as in 2011? I said that the Youth ladies race was "perhaps be the most difficult race of the day to call", and that proved correct, with Kate Curran (Bike Science) stepping forward to take gold after a bike breakaway with silver medal winner Megan McDonald.

As a member of the Richard Horton fanclub, I was disappointed to notice that although he finished in 3rd place in the Senior race, besides taking first place in the Junior event on his very first duathlon event, there is not one single photo of him to be seen. Yet there is a picture of the guy who was given 3rd place in the senior event, who finished AFTER richard. This seems to render richard into obscurity.
