This Sunday the British Elite Duathlon Championships takes place once again at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough, organised for British Triathlon by Just Racing UK (www.justracinguk.com).

Senior and Junior athletes will be competing (together) over draft-legal 5km / 20km / 2.5km distances with a prize purse of £5000 on offer, split across the top five finishers, male and female as follows:

Pos Men Women
1st £1000 £1000
2nd £750 £750
3rd £400 £400
4th £250 £250
5th £100 £100

(Juniors are eligible for the prize money too, should they finish in the top five overall). Youths will race over a 2.5km / 10km / 1.25km course.

Race Schedule

09:00 - Youth Females
09:45 - Youth Males
10:30 - Elite Junior & Elite Senior Females
11:40 - Elite Junior & Elite Senior Males

ENTRY LISTINGS

Preview

Defending Champion and pre-race favourite must be Mark Buckingham, who recently secured his first ITU podium finish in Salinas, Ecuador. Second in 2009 and fourth last season, fellow TriGold graduate Matthew Gunby can also be expected to be challenging Mark for top spot on the podium.

None of Senior female podium finishers from 2011 are listed this year, which would appear to leave the race very open in the absence of World Champion Katie Hewison.

Lucy Gossage is an interesting name on the startlist. The Ironman 70.3 Ireland winner is best know for her longer distance exploits, but we know she has been running well this winter and could well be in with a podium shout, having the experience of a sixth place finish last year in this event. Having taken the silver medal last season, George Schwiening would appear to start as favourite for the female juniors, and having finished just seconds behind Gossage last year could be a factor for overall honours too.

The largest entry field of the day is for the Youth males where defending champion Miles Burton returns, having won the 2011 Youth Duathlon title - plus the Aquathlon and Triathlon too - in his first year as a Youth. He has talent in his blood - father Steve was a European Elite Duathlon medal winner - and thus will once again start as the hot favourite.

With all of last seasons Youth female podium finishers having 'aged up' to Junior for 2012, that looks set to perhaps be the most difficult race of the day to call with Molly McKenzie (7th) the highest placed returning finisher from the 2011 edition.
