Loretta Harrop, Australia's former World Champion and a Silver medalist in the Athens Olympics, has decided to retire. She says that she has lost the desire to compete and will turn to being a full-time mother to her son, Hayden. Harrop's career had more than its fair share of ups, downs and controversy. Her win at the 1999 Montreal World Championships looks to have been surpassed as she entered the home straight at the Athens Olympics in 2004 - only to be pipped to the post by Kate Allen - an Australian who had changed nationality to become an Austrian.

Her battle to get into Australia's team for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, she finished fifth, was lengthy, bitter and expensive and just two years later her younger brother, and fellow triathlete, Luke was killed in a hit-and-run accident while riding on the Gold Coast. Loretta plans to continue making her annual pilgrimage to race at the Luke Harrop Memorial triathlon but the professional career is over.
