It’s a fact, triathletes love kit! And nothing gets more discussed, considered, argued about and drooled over than bikes. We love bikes too, so we thought we’d bring you a new feature, ‘Bike of the Race’. There are no rules involved – you may be the fastest or the slowest in your age group. You may even be an elite athlete. You could be riding the most ‘bling’ bike available, a rare Italian thoroughbred or an old shopper (with basket attached…). Or, we might just like you! As always, our Tri247 staff will be out and about all over the country (well, the world actually!), so if you get a tap on the shoulder and asked for a photo – be nice to us, and smile!

Felicity Hart

Kuota Kalibur

Felicity Hart's Kuota Kalibur

Our first bike of the week belongs to Felicity Hart, Age Group National Champion at Wakefield, and overall winner of the Dambuster World Championship Qualifier. Felicity is a relatively new name on the triathlon scene but, if you’ve been watching the results sheets during 2007 – she can usually be found at the top of pretty much every race she enters! Overall wins at Swindon, Cambridge and Clumber Park Duathlons (all with fastest bike splits) earned her selection for the elite World Duathlon Champs in Hungary. Unfortunately, illness prevented her competing.

To prove her recovery was on track however, just three weeks prior to Dambuster she took fifth overall in the National 25-mile Time Trial Championships, barely a minute away from a win. That was her first time trial of the year... it’s no surprise, therefore, to find that Felicity rides a bike with a fast history…

Double Hawaii Ironman Champion, ‘Stormin’ Norman Stadler, brought Italian manufacturer Kuota to the attention of most triathletes with victory in Hawaii 2004. After puncturing in 2005, he returned in 2006 to win again and set a new bike course record in the process, again on a Kuota.

Felicity rides the same range-topping full-carbon monocoque ‘Kalibur’ model as Norman, fitted out with a fine array of equipment:

  1. Full Shimano Dura-Ace 10-speed groupset
  2. Oval tribars with bar-end shifters
  3. Corima disk wheel
  4. Corima deep rim front.

All top stuff – but nothing too unique… until we said “We didn’t know Corima did wheel graphics in pink!” Not only a fine bike, but a personalised one too, as Felicity admitted that she’d sought out a colleague to re-brand her bike from the standard yellow decals!

Thanks for the bike are in part due to her sponsor, equestrian supplies website www.4dobbin.com. Believe it or not, equestrianism is her background – quite how that helps in swim, bike, run we're not sure – but it’s clearly working.

For the rest of the year, the Hamburg World Championships and possibly Powerman Geel (Belgium) are on the schedule. So, look out for this bike – and don’t blink, it’s likely to be moving very fast…
