7Oaks Tri Club are excited to announce that Dr Stephanie Cook MBE will be a guest at their fifth Junior Aquathlon on Sunday 5th July. Steph won the first ever Womens Olympic Modern Pentathlon which was held at the Sydney Olympics on 1st October 2000.

Modern Pentathlon combines pistol shooting, epee fencing, swimming, show jumping and cross country running but had always been a male preserve at the Olympics. Going into the final event – the 3km run - Steph was lying in eighth place but stormed past the seven athletes who were ahead of her to claim the victory. GB's Kate Allenby took the bronze medal.

Steph said “I am really looking forward to coming to the 7Oaks Junior Aquathlon. Whilst I will be watching my own son compete for the first time, it will also be great to see so many youngsters who range in age, ability and experience taking on such a challenge. Multi sports events always seem to have a special atmosphere and the reports I have read indicate that the 7Oaks race will be no different. I am sure that everyone will have a great time. Of course this event is only possible with the help of many volunteers, and indeed no sportsperson at any level would be able to achieve success without the help of volunteers, so this will also provide an opportunity to thank everyone who makes this event happen.”

Aquathlon Race Director, Mike Clyne, responded to the news by saying “we are thrilled to be able to welcome Steph to our event and to introduce her to the 8 – 16 year olds who are competing. She achieved the pinnacle of her sport in winning the Olympic Gold medal and was part of the team that changed the fortunes for GB at the Olympics – 2000 was a game changer for our country. Our event provides free photo downloads for all competitors and I imagine that there will be many who will want a picture of themselves, with Steph and her Olympic Gold medal. We are also pleased that she has particularly mentioned the volunteers for the event without whom it would not take place.”

The race sold out within two weeks when entries opened in March. The next aquathlon will be in July 2016.
