The first round of the 2015 ITU World Series kicked off today on a flat and fast course in Abu Dhabi. Having won her last five WTS events, the shadow of World Champion Gwen Jorgensen would cast a large shadow over every other elite women on the start list, and with good reason.

Despite a slightly fumbled start to the non-wetsuit swim, Spain’s Carolina Routier headed out a long line of swimmers with GB ace Lucy Hall in close order, while Jorgensen and Commonwealth Games champion Jodie Stimpson were 30 seconds plus down the line of athletes entering T1.

Late in the bike a group of Flora Duffy (BMU), Lisa Norden (SWE), Lucy Hall (GBR) and U.S. pairing Lindsey Jerdonek and Katie Zaferes escaped, reaching T2 26 clear of a chasing pack… but with Jorgensen, Haug, Hewitt, Moffatt and Jorgensen (with a slow transition too), almost one minute in arrears with the majority of the field.

Reigning XTERRA World Champion Flora Duffy soon hit the front from that leading five on the run, with Lindsey Jerdonek trying to stay with her. Meanwhile, the long legs of Jorgensen were cutting through the field like a hot knife through butter – not just different class, several different classes above everyone else on the run. With 2.5km to go, Gwen had closed 45 seconds and was just 13 seconds back in fifth place. This race was only going to end in one way…

Jorgensen duly flew past Duffy shortly after the 3km mark, and her stranglehold on women’s Elite ITU racing would just grow stronger. The main race now was for second place as Zaferes was fighting back to challenge Duffy, a battle she would win, but both would achieve their first WTS podium finishes.

A great day for the USA women though, filling five of the top ten finish positions.

Not a stellar day for the Brits -Jodie Stimpson was first finisher in 17th, Lucy Hall 35th, Heather Sellars 42nd and Emma Pallant 50th, while Ireland's Aileen Reid was 24th.
