Tollakson dominates, Halksworth second at Mont Tremblant

$125,000 in prize money, a $25,0000 first prize, P-4000 status on the Kona Pro Rankings plus the title of North American Championship was the attraction for pro athletes at Ironman Mont Tremblant, Canada on Sunday. For those who didn't make the first cut of qualification for Kona 2014, this was also their best (and one of the last), chances to stamp that card should the Big Island of Hawaii be a goal for October in the second round of qualifying.

The men's race was dominated by TJ Tollakson. In close order with the lead group out of the water, headed by 2013 champion Luke Bell, Tollakson powered away from the entire field in the second half of the ride to lead Andreas Raelert by eight minutes at T2, Great Britain's Daniel Halksworth (fourth last year) by 15 minutes, and 20+ minutes more to the the rest of the (now distant) chasing field. In years past the question might have been could Tollakson keep the fast running Raelert from chasing him down, in 2014 it was actually Halksworth who was running down Raelert to takes second place - while Tollakson simply crushed the field by pulling away even more, eventually crossing the line almost 19 minutes clear of the British athlete.

Halksworth should now be all set for Kona, as will Tollakson - though Raelert isn't quite across the line yet, should a return to the course on which he has made the podium four times but never reached the top step still be his October target.

A field of just seven Pro female starters (and six finishers), for a Championship race paying eight deep all be proves that certain elements of the recently announced changes from Ironman (notably, to the calendar timing), make complete sense. Next years Ironman North America Championship race will move to Ironman Texas in May. That said, there must be more than a few female Pro's with no intention of racing in Kona in October who will (should?) be kicking themselves for missing out in Mont Tremblant.

That issue aside, the race among those female professionals who did race proved to be a good one, with Sara Gross (winner, and Sub-9 finisher at Ironman Brasil) running down Amber Ferreira (Ironman Lake Placid winner) to collect the $25,000, as Beth Shutt completed the podium.
