'100 Up' as Carfrae break smashes nine hours for Challenge Roth success

A closing 2:53:31 marathon from reigning Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae was enough to take her from fifth, 6:22 back at T2, to overhaul Rachel Joyce and take the title today at the DATEV Challenge Roth.

Her finish time of 8:38:53 is the fourth fastest time ever at Roth (only Chrissie Wellington has gone faster), and is also the eighth fastest iron-distance time in history. A milestone too - as it represented the 100th instance that a female has broken the nine hour barrier over the classic distance. That list quickly expanded to 103 as Rachel Joyce, Caroline Steffen and Yvonne Van Vlerken all added to their extensive Sub-nine hour histories too...

Great Britain's Age Group start Catherine ("The Great"!) Faux had another superb result, finishing sixth overall in a personal best time of 9:09:47. Subject to confirmation, we think that may represent a world best time for a female Age Group athlete, adding further to her successess which have included overall wins at the ITU and ETU Long Distance Championships, and of course that stunning Kona 2013 performance.

On her win, Carfrae said:

"I'm speechless, you guys are such a great crowd. Thanks to all the people who come out to show their support.”

“I’ve heard so much about the race it's hard not to get wound up in the emotion, the last 1km the crowds were amazing and felt myself getting emotional. I felt like I was going to cry,”

“I really enjoy racing Rinnie and Caroline but you know you are going to have to dig really deep on those days,” said Joyce.
