A week ago Sara Gross (CAN) finished 18th Pro woman at Ironman Texas in 10:05:13. She bounced back in some style this weekend to win Ironman Brasil, and in the process become the 42nd female to have broken the nine hour barrier for the iron-distance, on a very fast day on Florianopolis Island. Belgium's Sophie Goos came very close to making that 43, but crossed the line in second place, just 21 seconds over the nine hour mark. Talking to Uplace-BMC media she said:

“I am pleased. If I had known I was that close to a sub-nine hour Ironman, I would have pushed a little harder to shave off those extra seconds. Of course I would have loved to win. But Sara ran faster than I did today, so she deserves the title. My race was solid overall. The swim was okay, and I felt strong and in control on the bike and in the run. I had Sara in my sights for a long time, but after I had to take a bathroom break she was too far gone. Still, I am happy I did my fastest marathon here, especially considering the hilly course. I knew I was in good shape before the race, but it is still nice to be able to bring it on race day.”

The men's event saw a first Brasilian victory go to Igor Amorelli, while Harry Wiltshire can be happy to have takeen fourth place (and $3,000) for his long-haul travel.

Brit James Brown also finished inside nine hours, and 12th place Pro with a time of 8:55:36. Not bad with a full-time job too!
