The fifth editon of the iron-distance Challenge Barcelona-Maresme proved to be the fastest on yet - with course records smashed both the men's and women's events, plus the second fastest performance over the distance from a British athlete on record.

In our event preview on Wednesday we said that Tom Lowe was heading the British Pro entry, and indeed that proved to be the case - and lead it very well he did too. Most of 2013 has been a performance disaster for Lowe, but a win at Challenge Henley last month restored the confidence that his previous results and talent deserve, with Barcelona coming close to a second iron-distance victory in just over a month.

Germany's Konstantin Bachor was the pace setter for much of the day, adding a very rapid 4:14:16 bike split to a 52:25 swim which was one of the best of the day too. Typically, Lowe was off the pace in the swim (59:22), to which he added a strong 4:23:11 which brought him back into contention, but still well back on the pace of the flying German. Lowe left T2 in close contact with renowned Portuguese runner Sergio Marques, Scotland's Graeme Stewart and a group of athletes who set about closing the gap on Bachor. A 2:41:19 marathon proved enough for Lowe to catch and pass the German, his only problen being that Marques managed an even better 2:38:47 to take the win. Stewart had a great run too, 2:50:33, and his finish time of 8:16:42 (seventh) is both a personal best and a Scottish new Scottish record over the distance for the Celtman winner.

Austria's Eva Wutti backed up her stunning win at Challenge Barcelona with another sub-nine hour victory, this time 8:51:01 to take the win from a new edition to the sub-nine club, the experienced Lucie Reed who took second in 8:57:34. Yvette Grice took sixth place in her fifth and final iron-distance race of a very busy season.
