The end of season race. One last throw of the dice. S**t or bust!

"Ready for one last smashfest!! This race won't define my season - good result is a bonus, bad one will teach me a lesson. Seriously excited!"

Those the pre-race words of Duracell Bunny Lucy Gossage before today's Challenge Barcelona. I'd say she got a bonus and a lesson - EUR 8000 for the win, and a lesson that she's even more talented than perhaps she is even willing to give herself credit for!

You don't go sub-9 hours if you aren't seriously good, and today Lucy became the 32nd female to join the 'Sub-9 Club', her 8:58:43 winning time (via a 3:02:56 marathon) putting her in 30th place all-time in terms of fastest female iron-distance athletes. Another stat - and one I think perhaps puts it into perspective even clearer - Lucy is now one of only six British female athletes ever to go under nine hours, and every one of the other five (Chrissie, Rachel, Catriona, Leanda and Bella) have been, or currently are, senior elite World Champions. It's a breakthrough moment in what hasn't just been a breakthrough season - it's one in which she has simply smashed the door down virtually every time she has raced. 'The Goss' can be 'The Boss'.

British Elite Duathlon Champion, ETU Powerman European Champion, ITU Powerman World Duathlon Silver, and second at both Challenge Fuerteventura and Challenge (Half) Barcelona just a few highlights in which the cancer doctor has excelled - with the sole exception of a bike crash impacted Ironman 70.3 UK - every time she has raced. I call her the Duracell Bunny for a reason; it's clear that her batteries were fully charged for her final race of the year too.

Bravo Lucy, inspirational.

A fantastic day too for Mancherster Tri Club's Joe Skipper. If you ever want a guide to season planning, this is it. Last weekend Joe was due to race Ironman 70.3 France... but then forgot his passport, and couldn't get there. A bit of Twitter banter and then he signs up at the last minute for the full length Challenge Barcelona.

It should all end in tears... but no, it ended in fifth place and an 8:23:57 finish which will make him the 11th fastest British iron-distance athlete ever. I bet he's glad he forgot that passport now.
