The Vitruvian Triathlon is always one of the highlights of the UK season for Middle Distance fans. The event, based at Rutland Water has won many Race of the Year awards and always draws a full and quality to field to take on a course which, in my opinion, is very fair as it contains almost every style of riding you could wish for. Whatever you like, there is something in that bike course for you!

A fair course and also fair to say that in 2012 we had two very dominant winners.

For the men, Ben Howard didn't quite have the fastest swim split, but once out of the water he stamped his authority all over the race. His 2:01:36 bike split is incredibly impressive, taking almost six minutes out of eventual second placer Sam Baxter, no slouch himself after wins this year at The Beaver and of course that top five finish at Ironman UK. No easing up on the run either, 1:16:46 the fastest of the day too for a huge 11 minute margin of victory at the finish line. Baxter took second, a great result given his focus will be completely on Kona in five weeks time which third placed Robbie Whitaker (Lincsquad) only just missed out on a sub four hour finish.

Howard has had a very strong season so far, including third at TriStar Lyon and second at TriStar Milton Keynes. His 3:46:03 also, unofficially at least, comes very close to the 2010 3:45:51 course record of Joel Jameson.

The ladies race was dominated by Outlaw Triathlon 2011 winner, ETU European Championship Gold medallist and ITU World Age Group Champion Catherine Faux (GI Tri Bridgtown) - fastest swim, bike and run splits left her well over nine minutes clear of second place. The runner-up was Caroline Livesey (Army Triathlon Club), who performed so well this year at Ironman Austria. Faux now has five weeks until Kona - and with this sort of form could well be in with a podium shout on the big island.
