Vansteelant and Nyström are 2012 Powerman Zofingen Champions

The ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships in Zofingen, Switzerland is one of the the iconic, long-standing and incredibly tough races on the annual long distance calendar.

In our event preview on Wednesday we got the thoughts of the ETU European Powerman Champion Lucy Gossage, who was heading to Zofingen for the first time having started the year not even knowing about the race. That said, she probably hadn't expected to be British and European Duathlon Champion at this point of the season either!

When I spoke to Lucy in May, I said that I thought the race would be a good one for her, and she confirmed that several others had said the same - so, Zofingen it was!

Both the men's and ladies race became 'two horse races', the Belgian pairing of two-time champion Joerie Vansteelant and former ITU World Duathlon Champion Rob Woestenborghs creating a significant gap on their pursuers.

In the ladies race, after leading in a group of three at the end of the opening 10km run, Lucy was soon in a battle to maintain close order with the hard riding Eva Nyström (SWE). Nyström is an experienced athlete in Zofingen, second in 2007, 2008 and 2011. Gossage was to reach T2 around seven minutes in arrears of the flying Swede, but, with 30km of running ahead and with great form on the run this year, that was not a foregone conclusion.

Lucy did manage to close the gap slightly over the tough final run, but Nyström was holding firm after that excellent bike leg to come home just over four minutes clear of Gossage to finally take her first Zofingen crown.

Gossage should be pretty content however, such a strong performance on your first attempt at such a difficult race is a credit to her, and a World Championship Silver to add to British and European Gold is yet another highlight and what has been a stellar 2012 season - with more still to come!

Joerie Vansteelant is the dominant name in Long Distance Duathlon and also the Zofingen course record holder. He won this race in 2009 and 2011 (missing 2010 to race in the ITU World Champs in Edinburgh), and is the course record holder too.

Vansteelant and Woestenborghs would reach T2 in close order, but it was the mighty Vansteelant who managed to pull away over the tough 30km to add yet another win to a bulging CV.

In the Age Group races, provisional GB medals are as follows:

Nikalas Cook M3539, Gold
Dominic Rohan-Gates M2529, Gold
Steven Howes M5054, Silver
