The debut Ironman 70.3 Ireland in Galway last September was arguably the breakthrough Pro race of Lucy Gossage, who took the win, unexpectedly passing Rachel Joyce on the run course. No damage done to Rachel either - she went on to earn fourth place in Kona the following month!

Gossage is busy in Switzerland this weekend, while Rachel hasn't (we don't think?!) raced since her great win at Challenge Roth in July, with all eyes focussed on Kona, so there will definitely be a different look to the front end of the ladies race this time around.

Switzerland's Mike Aigroz dominated in Galway last year - and then went on the finish sixth in Kona - and with that background, no surprise that he is returning to Ireland again and will certainly start as the clear favourite to retain his title. An interesting name on the start list is Terenzo Bozzone. The multi-talented Kiwi has been immense over the 70.3 distance in recent years, but of late has been trying to get back to fitness after ongoing injury. A win last weekend in Brazil would suggest he is coming back to form, and if he is - and the start list doesn't lie - a definite podium finisher in my eyes.

Only four Pro ladies due to race per the listing supplied to us, and that would appear to indicate a head-to-head between Ireland's 'Green Machine' Eimear Mullan and Tine Deckers (BEL). Deckers is a three Ironman France winner (2009, 2010 and 2012) and finished twelfth in Kona last year. Mullan of course already has the Ironman UK and Ironman UK 70.3 double this season - but has been suffering with a stomach bug this week. If she can get over that, it should be a close race - with, perhaps, the motivation of a home win enough to get her across the line first. If she can do that... perhaps an attempt at winning all of the Ultimate Challenge races at Ironman Wales next month...? That would be quite a feat, but lets deal with Galway first!

Galway is a P-500 race in the Kona / 70.3 Pro Rankings with a total of $15,000 on offer - $3,000 for first place.
