Horst aan de Mass, Holland, a long-time staple of the Powerman ( Duathlon circuit this morning hosted the 2012 ETU Powerman European Duathlon Championship, as the European Triathlon Union (ETU) joined forces with Powerman to host their 2012 Championships.

Alongside the long-standing 15k / 60k / 7.5k Powerman event, a new Sprint (5km / 20km / 2.5km) European Championship was introduced.

Belgium's Joerie Vansteelant was the hot favourite for the men's title in the Powerman race, and he duly delivered on that expectation. Run one saw Vansteelant reach T1 with fellow Belgian Pieter Rijnders and Italy's Alessio Picco. Vansteelant then went to work on the bike, putting in the fastest split of the day on a flat and fast course that he knows well such that by T2 he was over two minutes clear of Anthony Le Duey (FRA) who had moved into second, with Rijnders and Wim De Cort (another Belgian...) a further 45 seconds back. And that was how it remained, with Rijnders getting the better of De Cort for the bronze medal.

Ireland's David Vaughan of Emerald Racing had what looks to be one of his best Powerman results to date with tenth (2:49:37), while Matt Moorhouse appears to have been a DNF on the bike leg.

Great Britain's 'Duracell Bunny' Lucy Gossage is having a blast right now. Having won the British Elite Duathlon Championships in March, and then finished a strong second at Challenge Fuerteventura, no swim and a longer format looked like it might suit the middle and long distance specialist. And it did, as Gossage added a European Duathlon Championship to her British Elite title.

Second after the first run, she was passed on the bike by Eva Nyström (SWE), who finished second at the legendary Powerman Zofingen last season. Running has been a particular strength of late for the diminutive Gossage, and she turned a one minute deficit at T2 into a wining margin of the same by the finish line. A great effort for the part-time cancer doctor. Next stop Zofingen perhaps?!
