Welcome to the newsletter

It was very quiet on the racing front this past weekend - probably a good job too, judging by the weather we are experiencing at the moment. It's all gone white outside where I am...

Last week on the site we interviewed former Olympic record holding swimmer, ex-pro triathlete and Paralympic coach Robin Brew. If you missed it, I highly recommend you have a read. Robin is making something of a 'recreational' comeback to the sport in May, to take on Ironman Lanzarote. You often hear commentators say that fourth place is the worst position to finish in a race, just out of the medals. Well, that's what Robin did 25 years ago at the Los Angeles Olympics. Does he still think about it? You bet he does... "EVERYDAY... The reality is that my life would have been very different had I achieved that 0.3 of a second faster." Emotional stuff, and an inspiring read.

This week we'll also be hearing the latest from Joanna Carritt, who is currently in the middle of Epic Camp, as she prepares for Ironman New Zealand. Last year Jo managed 65 hours of training in eight days at Epic Camp Italy... and thought she had dug herself into a BIG hole. Two weeks later she was first age-grouper across the line at the European Ironman Champs in Frankfurt. Fingers crossed for a similar result in Taupo next month.

Of course, this weekend coming it's the TCR Show (www.tcrshow.com) at Sandown Park. Tickets are still available online, or you can pay on-the-door. To help guide you around the show, as well as offering you the chance to win your choice of Asics training shoes, courtesy of Royles (www.royles.biz), in conjunction with the TCR organisers we've produced a downloadable guide to the show. It contains directions to Sandown Park, full schedules for the Gatorade 'Improve your performance' theatre, the 220 Triathlon Seminars and the Cycling Seminars, floor plan layouts and exhibitor listings, plus the chance to win those trainers. All you need to do is print out the guide, and hand in the competition section when you arrive at TCR.

Entries to the TCR Saucony 10km on Sunday morning (10:30 race start), are still available, but you will need to register at the One Step Beyond stand at the show on the Saturday, or before the event on Sunday if you want to run.

And finally... Girona Cycling (www.gironacycling.com) have extended the closing date of their fantastic competition to win a one week training camp for one person including en-suite accommodation, coaching, two massages, and local transfers to Sunday 8th February. Girona cycling have just completed the mammoth (and exhausting!) task of building a completely custom built triathlon and cycling centre in Girona, Spain. It looks stunning, and will be a great addition to the options available for some sport-specific sunshine. More details at www.maspelegri.com. Very tempting as I look out on the snow from the office window!

Weekend action

News from overseas first, where Tim Don won the Western Province Triathlon Championships, held at Brandvlei prison (!), in South Africa. Tim is a regular at this event, having lived and/or trained in South Africa for many years. He led from start to finish for a convincing win, ahead of Kent Horner (RSA) who finished just behind Tim earlier this month at the SpecSavers Ironman 70.3 South Africa. Full results HERE.

Pos Men Women
1st Tim Don 1:51:10 Claire Kingsley 2:12:51

Closer to home, it was the second round of the Earlybird Aquathlon Series which this time visited Tywyn. Last month in Machynlleth, Dafydd Davies edged out Tom Gloster, but the tables were turned in round two, as Tom took a narrow victory. Richard Lowe repeated his third place - sort of! Arguably the most interesting result of the day was female junior, Elinor Thorogood taking third place overall, less than a minute behind Tom. Elinor of course was recently announced as a member of British Triathlon's Olympic Talent Squad, and just last month was racing in Australia, as part of the GB Squad at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

Pos Men Women
1st Tom Gloster 35:19 Elinor Thorogood 36:11
2nd Dafydd Davies 35:37 Bridget Ripley 43:05
3rd Richard Lowe 37:00 Elizabeth Stieler 43:24
