Welcome to the newsletter

The Middle and Long Distance Triathlon scene in the UK has never had so many options on offer to athletes. Simply keeping up to date with them is almost a full time job. Will they all be here this time next year? That might well be another issue...for next year!

We recently took a trip down to South Wales to visit the home of Activity Wales Events, organisers of the Long Course Weekend, a three-day festival allowing athletes to complete an long distance event over three days, with a swim on Friday night, Sportive on Saturday and Marathon on Sunday. More than that though, there are a variety of distances on offer if you want to mix-and-match, or perhaps just focus on a couple of events. With its fourth edition approaching - and TV coverage confirmed - we wanted to find out more about this growing event. Check out this piece to find out more - and perhaps join us in July this year?

Coming up in 10 days time - and also in its fourth edition - is the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon. Now one of the marquee events of the early season, once again your Editor has the tough task of dealing with the buffet of the race hotel (!) and will be reporting on all of the news from the Emirate. A good quality field has already been confirmed - check out our dedicated section for the very latest news. Who will take home the $50,000 first prizes this year?

As with last year, the Abu Dhabi event does clash with the major UK triathlon event that week - The Triathlon Show! Firmly cemented as the opening of the UK season, the eleventh edition of what was previously known as 'TCR' takes place once again at Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey from 1st-3rd March. If you go on the Friday - and book in advance - entry is FREE. Check out the details below, and visit our Triathlon Show section on the site for the latest news, features, attractions and exhibitors.

Weekend action

Matthew Sharpe was the only GB athlete in ITU action this weekend at the sprint distance African Cup race in Cape Town and he picked up tenth place, Richard Murray (RSA) was the winner.

With the weekend's programme a bit less varied than expected owing to the Xendurance and Althorp duathlons being postponed owing to site conditions Saturday's results sheet so far only has the Salty Dog Duathlon at Boscombe. A new venture from Votwo - although they regularly use the same location for aquathlons in the Summer - the first winners were Piers Vallance and, presumably related in some fashion, Claire Vallance (Bucks Fire). Full results are HERE, the shorter distance results are at the bottom.

The middle event of their annual three-race series, the Winter Feast Duathlon's Main Course saw wins for Stephen Burns and Louise Crilly. Full results are HERE.

Technically on Sunday but in the wee small hours for us, Liz Blatchford made good on the Editor's predictions and won the Huskisson Long Course Triathlon, 'The Husky', in New South Wales. Jacqui Slack unfortunately scored a DNF on or after the bike. Check out the report HERE.

First in with a set of results from the UK on Sunday was the Rempstone Roast, actually a season-long series of races organised by Results Triathlon down on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. Steve Fergusson and Sophie White (London Dynamo) were the winners and a full set of results are HERE.

There were plenty of familiar names from the world of triathlon performing well in running events this weekend too - check them out in our separate feature HERE.
