Welcome to the newsletter

So now it's confirmed - Chrissie Wellington will not be racing Ironman again. Her full announcement is HERE.

13 iron-distance starts, 13 wins, four Ironman World Championships, Kona course record holder and the four fastest iron-distance times ever. Those stats alone have more than earned the term legend.

To define Chrissie's triathlon career by statistics though does not really do justice to the impact that she has made, and not just within the confines of swim / bike / run either. From winning the Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year award, being recognised with her MBE and, being a key voice last year at the absence of any women on the BBC Sports Personality shortlist, Chrissie has takes triathlon, women's sport and endurance generally to the mainstream. She describes her final race (which I talked about with her HERE) as "the icing on the cake for me as an athlete. It was my ‘perfect race’ and it ‘completed’ me."

Chrissie Wellington's departure from the professional Ironman world may well be a 'loss' to the world of triathlon, but I believe it is absolutely the right decision, and I commend her for making it. Whatever is next, expert her to succeed in that arena too.

Thanks for the memories.

Weekend action

It may have been the WTC's farewell to Laguna Phuket with the Challenge organisation announcing that it will be taking on the event from next year but that didn't stop it being a memorable race. Chris McCormack, already the poster boy for the new Tri Fest, found his mojo and dealt with the mix of heavy rain, heat and humidity better than the rest of the field. Fellow countrywoman Melissa Hauschildt finished eighth overall to scalp a whole bunch of serious male athletes in the process. Dr Tamsin Lewis was fourth while Leanda Cave seems to have been a no-show [UPDATE: Leanda reported via her Facebook page: "I couldn't make it to the start line of IM 70.3 Phuket this morning as I passed out in the med tent prior to the race from an allergic reaction to pain medication. I'm so disappointed"]. Full results via the WTC are here.

Pos Male Female
1 Chris McCormack (AUS) 4:04:40 Melissa Hauschildt (AUS) 4:23:30
2 Ruedi Wild (SUI) 4:07:17 Radka Vodickiva (CZE) 4:31:46
3 Tim Meyer (AG 18-24) 4:07:32 Belinda Granger (AUS) 4:41:53

Looks like the Kielder Off-Road Duathlon had a good turn-out with just under 200 individual entries and a clutch of pairs taking to the hills and woods round Kielder Castle. Individual winners were Harry Coates (Wallsend Harriers) in 2:02:55 and Sarah Smith (Teesdale Triathlon Club) in 2:44:58. The pairs event was won by Tim and Bill Calder in 2:08:52 with Sally Pattinson and Ruth Asbery the first all-female pair taking 2:47:37. Full results are HERE.

The Rempstone Roast MTB Duathlon is run as a series of three races over the Winter months and seems to be picking up a regular following among athletes in the South West. Sunday saw the second race of the series and Chris Weeks picked up the win with Helen Dyke (Exeter Tri Club) heading the women's field home by a considerable margin. Full results are HERE.

We used to know it as the Glentress Winter Duathlon but it's been moved to a new location although the new Bowhill Winter Duathlon series follows the same format of a short, a medium and a long event. Winner of the first race for the 2012/2013 series was Rory Downie (The Tri Centre) who is the current ETU U23 Cross Tri Champion in 36:49 with Joanne Thom (Edinburgh RC) picking up the women's trophy. Full results are HERE.

Black Country Tri's Splash & Dash Aquathlon was won overall by one Jodie Stimpson - a clear 38 seconds ahead of the first male competitor, Jordan-Lee Stanp (Wrekin College). Class, as they say, ... Full results for the senior and TriStar events are all on the StuWeb site HERE.

No such female dominance at North Devon Tri's Krazy Kristmas Kaper aquathlon where Dave Spencer took the overall win in 27:57. That said, the first woman home was Kim Escbaecher in fourth place overall in 29:25 and only one other person went sub 30:00 - although we don't know who was wearing the fancy dress and who wasn't!
