Tri247 Newsletter

Welcome to the newsletter

Not too many shopping days to Christmas...and as usual, the Editor hasn't event started. Oops...

There is still time to get something for the triathlete in your life, and we've been providing you with a few suggestions - some available at very reasonable cost too - in our 2010 Christmas List. We'll continue adding a new idea every day up to an including Christmas Eve. If you have any suggestions, why not get in touch with us?

There are only a handful of multi-sport racing options remaining in 2010, but if you still have the need to race a triathlon - and an open water version too - then Leybourne Lakes on Christmas Day and Boxing Day courtesy of Team Outrageous is where you need to be this year. Good luck if you are brave enough, but I'll stick to a steady (and wrapped up warm) run to prepare for my dinner this year!

Still plenty of triathlon news around, plus we have some great interviews coming up in the next week. Stay tuned for more on those.

The big news of the week was the announcement of the inclusion of Paratriathlon in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. A huge boost for the sport of triathlon generally, and Paratriathlon in particular. We also revealed that the Iron Couple, Stephen and Bella Bayliss would be leaving teamTBB after four very successful years. Read all about that HERE.

As always, read it all first of Tri247.

Weekend action

A quiet weekend for racing - not surprising given the recent weather, and the fact that Christmas is almost here.

The scheduled Edinburgh RC Winter Duathlon on Saturday was one of those that was a victim of the conditions, and cancelled well in advance of race day. However, we did get some racing action on Sunday.

Results Triathlon ( hosted their Rempstone Roast MTB Duathlon in Dorset. Iain Payne smashed the course record in conditions of "brilliant blue sky, sunshine and some slippy stuff..." There was also a course record in the ladies category from Helen Dyke - who took nearly 10mins from the previous best. Images from the event can be found HERE.

Full results HERE.

Pos Men Women
1st Iain Payne 1:29:57 Helen Dyke 1:49:58
2nd Marcus Dodd 1:31:03 Jane King 1:58:15
3rd Kim Little 1:31:56 Samantha Toop 2:03:36

The Epic Events ( Winter Duathlon Series Race 1 also survived the weather.

Ryan Hanlon was the fastest on the day for the three disciplines which are held with a break in between, as the cycle is run in individual time trial format. Probably more important than the racing are the cakes that are available post race!

Full results HERE.

Final duathlon of the weekend was the Deal Tri Winter Series Event sponsored by Nick Cunningham Plumbing and Heating (I'm guessing the 'heating' element of that combination is the most popular currently...)

Full results HERE, where Tim Kingston and Jill Cliff were the fastest on a what were described as "Arctic temperatures" at Fowlmead Country Park.

In other racing we noticed several triathletes towards the top of the Keyworth Turkey Trot Half Marathon results, including a win for Ironman AG 25-29 World Champion Louise Collins (1:24:00) plus Mark Couldwell (4th, 1:13:13), Matthew Hammerton (6th, 1:15:00) and Hywel Davies (7th, 1:15:44). Hywel, after breaking the 100km world record this year, is currently in training to set a new 24 hour indoor rowing mark...

Were also reliably informed that XTERRA racer Sam Gardner was part of the winning team (Sadam Who's Sane), at the TrailPlus Adventure Challenge Series Winter Wonder at Hawley Lake on Sunday. Results HERE.

ICAN Mallorca Triathlon - Saturday 17th September 2011

The ICAN Mallorca Triathlon 2011 offers both a full and half-ironman distance triathlon in the beautiful venue of Palma, Mallorca. The debut half distance event this year was a great success, won by Spain's top long distance athlete Eneko Llanos, and 2011 promises to be even bigger and better with the addition of the FULL ICAN iron-distance race.

To find out more about the exciting addition to the European event calendar check out the website at, or also see our dedicated event section on the main site.

The International Airport of Son Sant Joan in Palma is situated only 8km from the city and is the entrance to the island of Mallorca. As such, travel by air to the event should be straight forward, for a great end-of-season long distance event and the organisers are keen to attract athletes from the UK to take part.
