Welcome to the newsletter

December is upon us and it's cold, very cold!

Thankfully, for those of you in need of a racing 'fix' whatever the temperature, the multisport race scene is seeing a distinct growth in the number off off-road racing options. If you fancy getting muddy this weekend than how about the MudMan, part of the ASICS Off Road Series of races promoted by Human Race. If you fancy leaving your bike at home, they also have a challenging off-road 10km run for you - with more off-road action in January and February.

If you like things off-road - but want to swim too - then for planning 2011 take a look at the recently launched Scott X Tri Series (, which combines four UK off road triathlons into a series offering a prize purse of £5,000 from Scott bikes. There are plenty of other great events out there too - and with staging events on the open road becoming increasingly difficult - it's a trend we expect to continue.

Coming up this weekend is the final Ironman race of a very long season - Ironman Western Australia. Scott Neyedli finished second last year and races again, as does recent Ironman 70.3 Taiwan winner Jonathan Hotchkiss plus Tri247 columnist Joanna Carritt. Good luck to them all - we'll bring you all of the news from Busselton this weekend.

In this issue:

Weekend action

Ironman Cozumel, Mexico

Former Ironman 70.3 World Champion Andy Potts took his second Ironman title of the year with victory at the second running of the Ford Ironman Cozumel in Mexico on Sunday. Having won Ironman Coeur d'Alene in June, he went into the Ironman World Championships as one of the race favourites, but disappointed with a 21st place finish in Kona.

His 8:16:14 clocking in Cozumel was a course record, beating the 8:18:40 set last year by Belgian Rutger Beke. As always, he exited the water in first place with a clear lead.

On the bike, he was joined by Michael Lovato, Eduardo Sturla, Oscar Galindez and Balasz Csoke, with the five all starting the marathon run within a minute. A controlled 2:52:36 marathon was more than enough for Potts to pull away, and gain the valuable Kona Qualifying Ranking points for 2011 and take the race win.

Stephen Bayliss finished 18th (17th Pro) after fading drastically over the closing five miles before which he looked set for at least a top ten result. Steve Osbourne finished 20th (19th Pro) with one of the best runs of the day, a great 2:57:59 to finish in 9:06:29.

Yvonne van Vlerken of the Netherlands defended the title she won last year, her 3:13 marathon more than enough to catch and pass American Tyler Stewart - who had set the fastest bike split - for a 16 minute margin of victory.

Unfortunately Britain's Bella Bayliss didn't start after feeling unwell in the days before the race.

Several GB age groupers were racing, and at least two made the podium in their age group. Christopher Domoney (who was third in Kona), won the M60-64 by over an hour (10:40:11) while Mark Livesey was third in M35-39 (9:21:05). While they didn't make the top three in their age groups, Chris Goodfellow (M30-34, 5th, 9:23:01 and Conan Gibney (M35-39, 12th, 9:28:18) can be well pleased with their sub 9:30 finishes.

Laguna Phuket Triathlon, Thailand

Britain's Emma Ruth Smith, a first year pro more typically seen on the XTERRA scene, scored an impressive result at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon, finishing second to multiple Ironman winner Belinda Granger and ahead of former Kona second place finisher (2007), Samantha McGlone. You can read Emma's report on her race HERE. This weekend Emma will be racing at Laguna Phuket again, at the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship.

ICAN Mallorca Triathlon - Saturday 17th September 2011

The ICAN Mallorca Triathlon 2011 offers both a full and half-ironman distance triathlon in the beautiful venue of Palma, Mallorca. The debut half distance event this year was a great success, won by Spain's top long distance athlete Eneko Llanos, and 2011 promises to be even bigger and better with the addition of the FULL ICAN iron-distance race.

To find out more about the exciting addition to the European event calendar check out the website at, or also see our dedicated event section on the main site.

The International Airport of Son Sant Joan in Palma is situated only 8km from the city and is the entrance to the island of Mallorca. As such, travel by air to the event should be straight forward, for a great end-of-season long distance event and the organisers are keen to attract athletes from the UK to take part.
