Tri247 Newsletter

12th Jan 2010Issue 145

Welcome to the newsletter

In the newsletter just before Christmas, we urged readers to take care out on the roads in the current cold, ice and snowy conditions. Alas, one of the victims of the weather was none other than Britain's three-time reigning Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington who just over a week ago fell on a training ride - at low speed - and suffered several broken bones to her fingers, wrist and arm. We would like to wish her a very speedy recovery, and look forward to seeing her back in action during 2010.

If you are looking for a complete change of scenery - and sun - then maybe this Pacific adventure in Saipan and Guam with Sam Gardner & co. could be just what you are looking for. Off-road, on-road, diving, waterfall's all on offer here!

In this issue:

Weekend action

Or more correctly, this section this week ought to be weekend lack-of-action!

As we reported earlier in the week, the snow and ice seriously impacted the small weekend racing schedule. The Edinburgh Racing Club Duathlon was postponed until 27th February, while the Epic Events Winter Duathlon was also re-scheduled to 31st January.

So, just when I thought there was nothing to report on...those crazy people at Team Outrageous ( get in touch to report on their Cold Water Swim Races at Leybourne Lakes on Saturday. Probably shouldn't be surprised, since as organisers - for 17 years - of the Christmas Day (open water, non-wetsuit...) Triathlon, they think this sort of thing is quite normal. Mike Russell reports:

"we had three events. A male sprint - about 30 metres, a female sprint over the same course and a 400 metre endurance swim. the temperature was minus 2°c officially.

The 400 metre event was won by Victoria Moore of Slough & Eaton Dolphins, in an amazing 5 min 55 sec. The swim of the day was Steve Adams of Team Outrageous in his first ever endurance race. Steve struggled to do 400 meters in the summer last year, but has been a regular throughout the winter. Perseverance pays off.

The Men's sprint was won by Guy MacDonald of Team Outrageous and the women's race was won by Amanda Worsley of South London Swimming Club. Ironically both winners posted the same time in their separate races!
