Tri247 Newsletter

Welcome to the newsletter

It's the perfect time of the year for the British isn't it? Cold, icy, snow - and as a nation we do seem to love moaning about the weather! But in all seriousness, do take care out there. We know that the 'driven' traits of triathletes means many of you are super keen to get out there on your bikes - possibly even new bikes depending on what Santa brings - but do keep it safe. 20mm of rubber and 100 psi of typical road bike tyre is not the ideal companion to ice and snow, so perhaps the turbo trainer is where you really ought to be? I much prefer winter running myself!

As the year draws to a close, our resident Ironman 'tourist' Henry Budgett reports on another year of globe trotting - including a first visit to Kona - and wonders if triathlon is a "cruel experiment in space/time distortion!". That sort of thing can happen when you walk into Starbucks for a latte and walk out with a Staffordshire Bull Terrier! Check out the image gallery to meet Freddie...

The Tri247 team would like to wish a very happy Christmas and New Year to all of our readers, contributors and advertisers. Your continued support means a lot, and we look forward to bringing you even more, even faster in 2010.

Christmas and New Year preview

This week we look forward, rather than looking back on the past weekend.

It is of course the quiet time of the year for multisport racing, as athletes take something of a break - even if that is in the form of alternative racing, such as cross country running, cyclo-cross or even the odd (very odd!) cold water swim.

All that can still get your triathlon fix - open water, non-wetsuit too - at the annual Christmas Day Triathlon at Leybourne Lakes courtesy of Team Outrageous ( Distances are 60m / 7km / 1km, and you may wear a wetsuit if you wish, though that will "incur a 10 minute time penalty and a season of ridicule!!" Entry to the race is free, if you are up for it? Check out a report from the 2007 edition HERE.

Keeping with the theme of 'non-wetsuit, open water and free entry' is the 2nd Annual Polar Bear Swim at Princes Club which takes place on Sunday 27th December. Free mulled wine too! More details HERE.

On Monday 28th, the Cliveden Cross Country - sold out as always - takes place at the stunning Cliveden House. You can check out more in our Garmin Route of the Month feature, in what your Editor rates as one of the most beautiful races to take part in - even if the 172 steps of Yew Tree Walk (twice!) will leave you cursing your decision to enter (but only briefly...).

2009 ends with the Milford New Year's Eve Duathlon in Derbyshire. You may well be able to enter this one on the day too - details HERE. The 2008 edition was won by regular Tri247 contributor (and 220 Magazine Age Grouper of the Year nominee) John Franklin. You can read John's report from last year HERE, and we believe he will be racing again this year.

As always, 2010 kicks off with the first triathlon of the year - The Tri Centre New Year's Day Triathlon - in Edinburgh. Let's hope the current snow and ice subside so that these events can go ahead safely.

F3 Events in 2010

The 2010 F3 events are being added to the website in conjunction with, there are going to be some new and exciting events planned to challenge the experienced and the first timer.

F3 Events appreciate all comments and have been working hard to implement these for the 2010 season. They have now joined forces with StuWeb Timing systems for all their 2010 events whereby you will get all splits and times whilst the event is taking place via the large TV screen which will then be hosted on their site and once the event has finished.

They have also linked up with the charity Sparks to help raise awareness for such a worthy cause. Lookout for more updates and F3 Events hope to see you for the 2010 event season for guaranteed fun and frolics!
