Welcome to the newsletter

Another week, another Ironman, another Bella podium...and finally, an end of season break! Ironman Cozumel was the 17th Ironman-distance event Bella Bayliss has raced over the past two seasons - and she won nine of them. Throw in a few additional podiums, a best ever at Hawaii (2008), and you have the very essence of a consistent, and extremely hard working athlete. Enjoy the break Bella. Please! More of the same in 2010?

Despite it being December, it's not quite the end of the Ironman year, with Ironman Western Australia from Busselton this weekend. Good luck to Scotland's Scott Neyedli for that one, where Scott is looking for a swift time - possibly even a Scottish record? - on what is a potentially very fast course.

Weekend action

Belgium's Rutger Beke proved he has recovered from his pre-Hawaii injury, by taking victory in the debut Ironman Cozumel in Mexico on Sunday. The former Kona podium finisher finished over tem minutes clear of multiple Ironman winner, Victor Zyemtsev (UKR), with Sebastian Pedraza (ITA) - a new name to us - taking the final podium spot. After a moderate swim, Beke took control of the race in the second half of the bike leg, and then closed out the win with a very strong 2:53:56 marathon.

After starting the run in fourth, Stephen Bayliss was a DNF during the first half of the marathon - apparently suffering with some horrible stomach problems early in the run.

For the ladies, we expected the toughest challenge for Bella Bayliss would be from Yvonne van Vlerken (NED), and this proved correct, as the former iron-distance world record holder took the win, stopping the clock at 9:06:58. Her race was arguably set up by the swim, where exiting within a minute of Bella on a non-wetsuit swim was a significant step forward for the former duathlon specialist. Despite her wins at Challenge Roth and second place at Kona 2008, this was Yvonne's first win in the Ironman series.

Bella secured yet another podium finish - second this time - ahead of Italian Edith Niederfriniger, the same athlete she outsprinted to win Ironman South Africa 2008.
