Leybourne Lake

On what will undoubtedly be the hottest day of the year, the second Berkeley Homes Leybourne Lakes triathlon got off to a flying start with the lake looking like a mill pond at 8am. Water temperature was almost in the 'wetsuit banned' category and a swim record was set by Sarah Hartshorn, despite going slightly off course (longer). The swim was dominated by the ladies, with Daniel Roiz de Sa splitting Sarah and Karen Sindall. Adrian Grimmond followed by 3 seconds before Robbie Cromey-Hawke followed Adrian by the same margin. Shirley Yarde and ladies winner Stephanie Maclean were just behind. The bike course was testing due to the increasing heat but times were fast because of the lack of wind. Daniel Roiz de Sa posted a blistering 1.02.51 on this technical and slightly undulating course. The run, however, saw Nick Kinsey come home with the second fastest run of the day in 39.45, only a second slower than John McConville. Nick also posted a superb 1.08.30 bike split which was the fourth fastest of the day. Five days before the race the run course had been changed to allow two laps of the lake which made a safer traffic-free flat run, despite the heat. Many thanks to the marshals and especially Paul Mepham, the relentless timekeeper. A great race was had by all, except Dave Paton, who sadly redesigned the front of a Range Rover (his fault by his own admission). Dave ended up in hospital with a serious gash in his right leg but no broken bones or head injury, thanks to his helmet. I am sure everyone will wish him a speedy recovery. Finally, thank you to all those competitors who have 'phoned and emailed me with their praise and thanks for the race.
