It was that time of year again when the community of Machynlleth and Bro-Ddyfi pull together to help out with the Bro-Ddyfi Triathlon. Well known for its warm welcome, friendly faces and early starts, 130 triathletes made their way to Aberdyfi for a 9:10 am start. The weatherman got it wrong again and it turned out to be a great day for racing - not too sunny, warm and a light south easterly wind, all was set for some fast times. The altered run course would be found to be far more testing than the famous Hill. With 2 waves a minute apart, due to the quickness of the tide turn in the Dyfi estuary, the race started at 9:09 and immediately into the lead went Oliver Simon of Pembroke Tri, setting a quick pace onto the bike at 20.09. Over two minutes behind was veteran Leyshon Williams and this was eventually to prove the finishing order. First lady out was local Hilary Roderick in 24.52 followed by Bridget Heath of Gower in 29.00. As the race progressed Oliver held onto his initial lead leaving run transition still 2 minutes ahead of the chasing pack now headed by Wayne VandenBergh of Taff Ely Tri, with Leyshon Williams just 25 seconds behind. The ladies arrived Hilary now being pursued by another local Paula Jeffs just over 2 minutes behind. Fastest bike spilt went to Steve Wilcox of RAFTA in a time of 1:05:22. On to the section most participants talk about -- the run. This year the route was altered slightly there was not so much height to be climbed but the incline was over a greater distance. Oliver arrived home over 3 minutes before the rest to a tremendous cheer having increased his overall lead and setting the target on this new course with a time 2:10:48 proving why he is one of the most talented triathletes on the scene at this moment. Leyshon Williams had been able to pull back into second place in 2:14:02 just ahead of Wayne Vandenburgh in 2:14:23. Fastest run split went to Gary Collis in 0:42:09. The Ladies race Pauls Jeffs had opened up a 1min lead on Hilary coming home in 2:33:57 and Hilary in 2:35:30, 3rd spot was Tjulie Harrison in 2:44:36. In the Vet cat powering very easy off the bike Leyshon Williams of 1485Tri, 2:14:02 came in first and overall second, with Mark Tabor Chester Tri second in 2:20:41 and 3rd Gerwin Davies 2:20:53. Super vet went Paul Belcher Cardiff Tri in 2:26:21 and Vintage vet tp Peter Norman of Wrexham Tri in 2:55:13 Ladies Vet went to Ann Fuller 2:44:43 persued by Wendy Lacey in 2:48:48. Junior Awards were taken by Emma Timmis of High Five in 2:51:46 and Mike Bridge of ACME in 2:35:34. The Team relay category, providing athletes new to the sport with the experience of doing a longer distance was proving very exciting, 1st home was Angela Ellis if Tywyn in 2:35:44, 2nd Wendy Yarranton in 2:43:52 and 3rd local team, Circuits Amanda Green in 2:50:49. With 15 local taking part in this years event, many the notable performances were achieved to mention Kevin Hamilton 2:17:06 7th overall, Ian Walker 2nd local 2:33:15 and Chris Williams 3rd local 3:03:18. Local Vet Peter Canter 2:44:49, Arwel Pryce 2:52:51, Super Vet Roger McLennan 3:00:53. Ladies local went to Paula with Hilary 2nd and Helen Walker 3rd. Drafting was not the problem it had been in previous years, and we were pleased to see the return of Gerry Fruin to the sport in his role as a draftbuster. We had a lot of helmet violations - simple solution, your helmet should be secure at all times when your bike is moving - infringement costs you 2 minutes. The organisers again wish to thank the large number of organisations and individuals who pull together to make the event a success.
