Barton Marina Sprint Triathlon 15th June 2014
Race favourites Carl Shaw (Tri Camp TFN RT) & Kate George (Derby Tri Club) lived up to the hype with a fine win at the inaugural Barton Marina Triathlon promoted by new organisers PMA Racing.
Perfect conditions greeted the 133 starters to the mass start 500M open water swim in the warm (17 degs) lake and it was Shaw who was first out of the water in 7:03 followed by team mates Greg Cherry and the World Age-Group (40-44) Triathlon Champion Andy Tarry. Tarry used his experience with a rapid transition to head out onto the bike just 20 seconds down on Shaw.
The bike consisted of an 18K rolling bike course on an out and back route through the scenic Staffordshire villages of Barton Under Needwood & Yoxhall. Shaw extended his lead to a minute with the fastest bike split. On the run Tarry used his speed to make in roads to make up the deficit and despite recording the fastest 5K split over the 2 lap run it just wasn’t enough to pull back Shaw.
Meanwhile in the ladies race junior Lauren Evans (Black Country Triathletes) was the first out of the water in 9:15 closely followed by Kate George in 9:44 but once onto the bike section George soon stamped her authority on the event recording the fastest bike split. In the process she cruised to a comfortable victory ahead of Derby Tri team mate Ruth Woodbridge and veteran Ros Kelling (Banbury Harriers) rounding up the podium places and taking the fastest run split in the process.
