In total 253 athletes turned out for the Althorp Duathlon on Saturday 25th February. Postponing the event from Saturday 11th February due to snow was the right decision as we were blessed with one of the finest days this side of winter.

The course was designed around a stunning 5km multi-terrain run through the tree lined avenues of the Spencer Estate and a beautiful 20km ride around Northamptonshire countryside villages. Event attractions included trade stalls, race commentator, sports therapist, sports photographer, bike mechanic and a 25 piece orchestra playing to the athletes at transition with Althorp House in the background.

In the olympic distance duathlon Colin Norris lead the first run, completing the two 5k laps to be 1st into transition with a fast 10k run of 33:48, closely followed by Ian Lawton and Phil Holland from Team Corley Cycles (Blue). Norris could not hold onto this lead on the bike section as Lawton and Holland came past with Lawton 1st into transition again and Holland only 8 seconds behind. A closely fought second run saw Lawton and Holland both finishing in sub 2 hours, with Lawton holding onto his lead to win in 1:58:30, and Holland coming in second in 1:59:06. Making up lost time on the bike Norris came back with the quickest second run to steal 3rd place on the podium in 2:02:33.

First lady into transition was Stacey Penn from Northants Tri Club. An impressively fast bike section developed her lead and she remained unchallenged throughout the course with finishing time of 2:16:16. A quick bike split from Anouk Molliex from Leamington Cycling and Athletics was not enough to catch up with Penn or 2nd place finisher Christine Howard from Police Sport UK.

Entries are open for the next Althorp Duathlon on February 16th 2013. Online entry at www.onyourmarksevents.org
