Skerries Triathlon (Dublin) report

350 athletes arrived early to the North Dublin seaside resort of Skerries as the Irish summer arrived late again. An Irish Triathlon (www.irishtriathlon.com) event with a great run in from the long sandy beach followed by a coastal cycle then turning inland for some testing hills before a beachside run.

90 Olympic distance competitors were off first into the somewhat choppy sea for an early morning noeprene wash cycle. Local lass and Channel swimmer Julie Galloway had a healthy lead after approx 2km of swimming and went on to win from Irene Walsh and Bernie McNally. Neill kelly won also leading all the way in 2.23 from Peter Murtagh and Patrick Carolan.

The Sprint race attracted a much bigger field and Patrick McKenna (Muckno Tri) lead the men home in 1.15.04 ahead of local man and former Irish Ironman record holder Alan Ryan now racing for Wexford. Steven Macklin got the better of Kevin Leavy on the run for third.

Trudy Brown (Real Triathlon) notched up her fourth win of the season and career no. 49, coming home in seventh overall in 1.21.12. Emma Early put in a strong bike and run preformance for third ahead of Lavana Chamney and Kathryn Bell (Real Triathlon).

Keith Duffy from Boyzone (read his Tri247 interview HERE) finished the Olympic distance for charity while dublin based Belfast singer Brian Kennedy watched the action. Brian will be competing in the Galway 70.3 and hails from a great running family in Belfast.
