British Triathlon report on the Rother Valley Sprint Triathlon, which took place on Sunday.

The Rother Valley Sprint Triathlon took place on Sunday 12 June with competitors all racing to take book their place in the GE Great Britain Age Group Team for the 2012 ETU Sprint Triathlon European Championships.

Over 500 competitors were greeted by blue skies, however water temperatures of 18 degrees and a challenging bike course ensured nobody had an easy day of racing.

In the men's race, former world age group champion, Nick Dunn delivered a dominating performance to win the event by nearly five minutes. The Nottingham based athlete won the event in 1:07.36, with the leading overall bike and run splits inflicting the biggest time gaps on his rivals.

Nick commented after the race: "I have raced there before and had a technical problem, so it was great to race problem free at the weekend. I knew the course was hilly, and have been training in Majorca for the last few weeks, so was well prepared for the ups and downs of South Yorkshire."

He continued: "It's always nice to win, especially at Rother Valley. The next big challenge is the European Championships in Spain where I really want to perform well, although I am very aware the competition will be tough."

Stewart Bates finished second in 01:12.28, with Ian Smith in third place in 01:12..47.

In the women's race, Lou Collins claimed the victory recording an equally impressive plus five-minute time gap to finish in a time of 01:15.28. Her club mate Verity Butler finished second in 01:20.35, with Ellen McArthur finishing third in 01:21.35.

The Rother Valley Sprint Triathlon was the second of three qualifiers for the 2012 ETU Sprint Triathlon European Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Israel next year. The final opportunity to qualify takes place at Newbiggin Bay Sprint Triathlon on 11 September 2011.
