There was always a strong possibility that we would get a place on the podium at the Foster Grant Ironman 70.3 Championships in Clearwater today with defending Champion Julie Dibens facing stiff competition from Leanda Cave and rising star Jodie Swallow but the sequence turned out to be a little different. Jodie Swallow led the race from gun to tape and even extended her lead during the run while Dibens had to give up second place to a charging Leanda Cave at the nine mile mark and then slipped further back down the field. Cave finished in second just over six minutes back while Magali Tisseyre was snapping at her heels for third.

So far there's been no comment from Jodie on IronmanLive but Leanda Cave is reported as saying "Sometimes I think my body's had enough!" to Chris McDonald at the finish line. She has had a tough couple of months; 10th in Kona, winner at Ironman 70.3 Miami and now second here in Clearwater. All she has left is the Ford Ironman Arizona next week...

Dibens couldn't work her magic from 2009 and ended up in 8th with Lesley Patterson ahead of her in 6th while Emma-Kate Lidbury rounded out the top ten. Now that's a pretty emphatic demonstration of the strength of GB women in the long distance arena!

Pos Male Female
1 Michael Raelert 3:41:19 Jodie Swallow 4:06:28
2 Filip Ospaly 3:42:56 Leanda Cave 4:12:34
3 Timothy O'Donnell 3:44:18 Magali Tisseyre 4:13:04

Best GB male performance was James Gilfilan's outstanding 22nd overall to win the 30-34 age groupwhile Paul Amey was 24th. There are lots more to come though, we'll bring you a full round-up later.
