We 'think' it is a British one-two at Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens today, or an Aussie-Brit one/two at least!

Joe Gambles won the 2008 ETU European Long Distance Triathlon Champs in GB colours, while Paul Ambrose was fifth in Perth last year at the ITU World Long Distance Triathlon Champs though both spent most of their formative years 'down under'.

Usually a strong swimmer, Gambles was around a minute off the pace of the early leader in the water, but made that up on the bike to reach T2 in lose proximity to nine other riders, including Ambrose, Luke McKenzie and James Cotter. At this stage, Aussie Luke Bell lead the way, with a 1:15 buffer built on the bike from the chasers.

Gambles (fastest, 1:14:47) and Ambrose (1:16:20) put the pressure on during the run, and while Bell ran strong (1:18:18), it was enough to catch an pass, as the first three all broke four hours.

Close racing too in the ladies race, where Melanie McQuaid, a name more commonly seen on XTERRA results sheets just held off Tyler Stewart by a mere 20 seconds, with former ITU World Cup Series winner Samantha Warriner in third, leaving the likes of Sam McGlone and Linsey Corbin out of the podium slots.

Pos Men Women
1st Joe Gambles (GBR/AUS) 3:57:47 Melanie McQuaid (CAN) 4:27:16
2nd Paul Ambrose (GBR) 3:59:07 Tyler Stewart (USA) 4:27:36
3rd Luke Bell (AUS) 3:59:53 Samantha Warriner (NZL) 4:29:09
