Mick Dicker for Raw Energy Pursuits (www.rawenergypursuits.co.uk) reports on the BLOC Worthing Triathlon.

BLOC Worthing Triathlon
1.5km Sea Swim – 43km Bike – 10km Coastal Run
Taut National Ranking Series 2009 – 4th race

Unusually balmy conditions greeted athletes onto the Sussex coast for 6th Worthing Triathlon as part of the National Ranking Series.

Evergreen Colin Dixon made it a hat trick of wins after dominating the event.

Deceptively calm sea conditions caught most of the women’s race off guard as the strong current swept them away from the first buoy. First out the water was Ruth Jones in 22.28 just in front of Bodyworks Yvette Grice and Victoria Beany. Hot on their heels were top junior Sarah Wigmore from A2 Tri and first into transition Team REP’s Niki Treacy who posted the fastest bike split. With the women starting at 7am and the men just after 7:11 (based on the difference between the first male and female times the previous year), the men started the chase for the overall win prime led by VO2 Max’s Phil Duma, Portsmouths Peter Cambell and Dixon. By the time Treacy had exited T2; Dixon had closed the gap and was making ground. Out onto the lapped run course along the promenade Dixon set a blistering pace to pull away from Treacy, who had in turn been overtaken by Wigmore as she prepares for Australia later this year.

Dixon eventually won convincingly from Cambridge Tri’s Mark Matthews and Jon Worcester from Met Police Tri. Wigmore had the race of her life and held off a fast finishing Yvette Grice from Bodyworks XTC and Team REP’s Niki Treacy. The relay race was won by Sussex team Wam Bam.
