Britain went into Sunday's Ironman 70.3 Florida with two defending champions in Paul Amey and Leanda Cave, and both were back for 2009, along with a host of eager male Brit pro's.

After leading out the swim with Nina Kraft (GER) and Brooke Davison (USA), Leanda got straight to work on the bike, and powered away from the rest of the field to build up a huge lead of close to eight minutes by T2, against the likes of Joanna Lawn (NZL), Magali Tisseyre (CAN) and Nina Craft. The run was no different, and with those three athletes left fighting for second, Cave showed no signs of faltering as she powered on to retain her title by a big margin. Having finished third at Ironman 70.3 California and second at Wildflower (both of which she did last year too) already, Leanda's 2009 season appears well on track.

Paul Amey (3:57:19) wasn't able to repeat his 2008 win, however he was top Brit finisher in a fine fourth. There was excitement at the finish with a sprint between Dirk Bockel (LUX) and Luke Bell (AUS) for the win, with the Olympian Bockel using his short course speed to secure the title.

Pos Men Women
1st Dirk Bockel (LUX) 3:54:40 Leanda Cave (GBR) 4:15:47
2nd Luke Bell (AUS) 3:54:43 Joanna Lawn (NZL) 4:24:00
3rd Santiago Asenco (BRA) 3:56:25 Magali Tisseyre (CAN) 4:24:23

Jonathan Hotchkiss finished 16th (4:08:37), Toby Jameson 20th (4:13:25) and Dion Harrison 30th (4:24:22). We think Fraser Cartmell (who has been struggling with injuries), was a DNF on the run, after putting in an excellent swim-bike.
