Another World Championship Gold for Olympic Champion Alistair Brownlee

Brownlee adds Aquathlon World Championship title to impressive palmarès as Richard Allen takes Silver in the Elite Men's Under-23 race

While it may well have been a surprise to see him start, it was no surprise to see Alistair Brownlee win the ITU Aquathlon World Championships in Cozumel, Mexico today.

Held over a 2.5km run / 1km swim / 2.5km run format, Brownlee hit the water with just Mexico's Crisanto Grajales for company after the opening run, with around 15 seconds back to a group including Steffen Justus (GER), Richard Allen (GBR), Tommy Zaferes (USA) and the Polyanskiy brothers from Russia, with Richard Varga (SVK) a further 15 seconds in arrears.

After the swim, Brownlee had been joined by Varga, Zaferes, Igor Polyanskiy and Michal Oliwa (POL) as Grajales went backwards. With just 2.5km of running, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that Alistair Brownlee was able to cruise home to the win with four-time champion Richard Varga second and Tommy Zaferes taking the Bronze.

Brownlee wins

Not the biggest or most important championship Alistair Brownlee has ever won - but you have to say, his C.V. is pretty impressive...
