Jonathan Brownlee delivers 'Czech Mate' performance in Karlovy Vary

No rest for the Olympic Silver medallist after Rio...

As we mentioned in the weekend preview piece, twice Olympic medallist Jonathan Brownlee was making an unexpected (to us) appearance this week to race on the ETU European Cup circuit in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Far more used to racing almost exclusively in the 'premier league' tier of ITU racing, the World Triathlon Series (WTS), the ETU European Cup is effectively the third tier of draft-legal racing after the WTS and ITU World Cup Series.

Racing over the Standard distance, it was a Brownlee solo domination. Exiting the swim with just the French pairing of Raoul Shaw and Anthony Pujades, with a gap of close on 50 seconds to the chasers, Brownlee and Pujades extended that further on the bike over the seven lap course which includes challenging hills and cobbles. Such was the pace at the front that 20 athletes got lapped out, showing just how significant the performance gap is between the very good and the truly exceptional.

Reaching T2 with a 40 second lead over Pujades, Brownlee was under no pressure, but the fastest run split of the day resulted in a massive winning margin of over four minutes. He will now head to Edmonton next weekend for the penultimate World Triathlon Series race of the season, seeking another win which would put hin into contention for 2016 World Championship honours at the Grand Final in Cozumel.

Great Britain's only representative in the Women's race was Heather Sellars. After recent third places finishes at the AJ Bell London Triathlon and the British Championships at Tri Liverpool, she mainted her consistency with a fourth place finish, just under a minute down on what was a tough battle for the podium positions, won by Yuliya Yelistratova (UKR).
