Olympic Triathlon Champion signs up for New York City Marathon

You've won the Olympic Games Triathlon, the one thing you've targetted for four years... so, what next?

"I have no plans beyond 20th August 2016" is what Gwen Jorgensen has being saying for the past four years. After a flat tyre at London 2012 the dominant athlete in women's ITU racing since then has had a single-minded focus on one goal. Of course, in the process she has become a two-time World Champion and built perhaps the greatest period of race results consistency we've ever seen, but it was always part of an 'eyes on the prize' goal - to win in Rio. She did that of course, and now has some freedom to decide what's next.

Winning an Olympic Games Gold opens up lots of opportunity, and one of those opportunities she is going to take is to run the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday 6th November 2016.

In an official announcement, Gwen added:

"This has been such an incredible year for me, and I thought what better way to continue to challenge myself than by running my first marathon,” said Jorgensen. “The triathlon will always be my first love, but I am really looking forward to the marathon and cannot think of a better place to make my debut than New York City.”

A familiar path...?

You may remember that Nicola Spirig (SUI), who pushed Gwen so hard in Rio and winner of the Triathlon Gold at London 2012, also did some marathon running after her Olympic triumph in Hyde Park.

In 2014 she finished seventh in the Zurich Marathon (2:42:52), which qualified her for the Swiss Marathon team at the 2014 European Athletics Championships (also in Zurich), running a PB time of 2:37:12 for 24th position after going through the first half in a time that, from memory, was quicker than her 'official' half marathon best.

Spirig returned the Zurich Marathon in 2015, finished third (2:46:08) - and then a week later made the podium at the ITU World Triathlon Series Cape Town!

How fast can Gwen go?

A couple of points

  1. Gwen hasn't (and by November, won't have), prepared specifically for an Elite marathon race.
  2. A week before the marathon, Gwen will spend three days racing at the Island House Triathlon in Nassau, an event she won last year, which offers a total prize purse of $500,000 with $60,000 to the winner...

So, how fast will she run in New York?

For me... it doesn't matter!

Clearly, Gwen could run very well - and she may very well do so - but, I just say, go and have fun!
