Monster Middle and Monster Standard Distance Report 2016

Monster Racing staged their Middle and standard Sistance Triathlons around Ely on Sunday, 21st August.

These events attract a real mixed field from newcomers to the sport to GB age groupers. Monster Racing events are well supported with a generous prize fund from their sponsors, this support is key for ensuring that a top quality race like this on the UK calendar attracts an elite field. The start list promised to be a great race to watch with an exciting battle for the podium places and the prizes!

Over 400 athletes signed up to the events, which promised an iconic swim through Ely in the River Ouse to start, a flat fen bike course and a spectacular run route around the city to the finish line with the magnificent Ely Cathedral in the background. The athletes in the Middle took on a mile and a quarter swim, 58 mile cycle and 13 mile run, whilst athletes in the Standard completed just under a mile swim, 26 mile cycle and a 7 and a half mile run. For many the months of dedication to training meant personal best times!

The Monster Middle winner in a time of 4hr 24min 47sec was Andrew Diplock (Cambridge Triathlon Club), second male was Scott Wiseman (Ashford Tri Club), 4:26:11, and third male was Karl Free (Met Police Tri Club), 4:29:00). The female winner was Dionne Allen (Team Ribble Cycles), 4hr 43min 47sec, second female was Darrelle Parker (TRISUTTO), 5:00:07, and third female was Vikki D’Arcy, 5:02:45.

Triathlon England selected the Monster Middle to be the Eastern Region Championship middle distance event. The Senior (20-39) champions were Andrew Diplock (Cambridge Triathlon Club) and Suzy Knights (Beccles Triathlon Club). The Veteran (40-54) champions were Carl James and Lynn Emmett (Tri-Anglia). The Senior Veteran champions were Paul Lewis (Tri-Anglia) and Jill Larham (Tri-Anglia).

The Monster Standard winner in a time of 2hr 19min sec was Timothy Murphy (Clapham Chasers), second male was Max Wolke (Clapham Chasers), 2:23:26, and third male was Matthew Mcclure (Whizzy Tri Club), 2:25:29). The female winner was Verity Smith (Stowmarket & District Cycling Club), 2hr 35min 3sec, second female was Juliet Vickery (Cambridge Triathlon Club), 2:35:17, and third female was Kimberly Bell, 2:42:18.

First and second placed athletes won cash prizes donated by Revitaflex, third place athletes won a voucher donated by Zone3. The winning male and female in the 19 – 24 category in the Standard and 40 – 44 category in the Middle ran home with a brand new pair of Alphawoolf trainers, an established brand newly available in the UK.

Tasty race nutrition was provided by Hammer Nutrition and 9Bar.

For those looking to race in September, Monster Racing have their Run Fest to tempt people with. Entries are open at

The organisers commented: “Monster Racing events are known for their excellent organisation and fantastic courses! So much so, that once again the Monster Middle was selected by Triathlon England to be the Eastern Region’s middle distance championship event.

The Monster Middle and Standard are very popular events to ensure you get a place next register early to avoid disappointment.

We would like to thank everyone who helped marshal, all competitors, all safety and ‘behind the scenes’ crew as well all our sponsors. Thank you also to Kings School, Ely Cathedral and City and District Council for supporting the event with access to grounds and road closures.”
