Lucy Biddlestone on The Bastion - "A beautifully brutal triathlon"

She may not be a familiar name (yet) to many in the UK triathlon scene, but Lanzarote-based Brit Lucy Biddlestone is certainly well known as a fast improving athlete in her Canary Island's base. Coached by the legendary Bella Bayliss, Lucy was in the UK recently where she raced - and won - The Bastion.

This is Lucy's report - not about her race as such, but the Bastion experience. If you like things tough in a beautiful environment, while being looked after by the friendliest organisers, marshalls and volunteers then perhaps The Bastion is the race for you.

The Bastion (Castle Triathlon Series) is by far, one of my favourite races I have ever done! It was such a beautifully brutal triathlon and is no doubt up there with some of the meanest courses out there. I think most of us who were taking on ‚Ä™#‎TheBastion‚Ĩ for the first time, under-estimated how tough the course would really be.

The organisers, marshalls and volunteers were by far the friendliest we have ever encountered on a triathlon event. We had a couple of hours of heavy rain out on the bike, and they made a huge difference by staying so friendly and happy all the way round, no matter what the weather.

As we all know, triathlon isn’t the cheapest sport in the world, so it was so lovely to enter a race that didn’t totally break our bank accounts. On top of that, we received really generous goody bags at the start. Two of my girlfriends are signing up for next year already, one of the reasons being that we each got given one of those amazing KITBRIX triathlon cube bags.

I can’t recommend this triathlon enough to any level of triathlete; it suits newcomers who want to try the distance but maybe don’t want all the frenzy that some of the bigger events some times create. Also to those age-groupers who take the sport very seriously and are looking to clock some good results with slightly a smaller field then the big events.

The 4 lap run course around the Hever Castle gardens was like a trail run in places and very challenging

My family are fantastic supporters when we go to race, but some races don’t have much for spectators to do while we are going round and round. The Castle Triathlon Series seemed to look after the spectators as much as they do the athletes. So we weren’t as worried about them not having enough to do while they waited around for us to pass by each lap.
