Duracell Bunny Lucy Gossage wins third IRONMAN UK title in Bolton

She first won in 2013 and then returned last year, and now Lucy Gossage joins Bella Bayliss (2007 / 08 / 09) as a three-time winner of IRONMAN UK

Germany's Kakja Konschak (second recently at the IRONMAN European Championships in Frankfurt) held a narrow lead out of the 3.8km swim, but pre-race favourites Gossage and Tine Deckers (BEL) were both within a couple of minutes of her.

Gossage, and the five-time Ironman France winner Deckers were son at the front of the race and building a huge lead, with Gossage (5:15:04) setting the fastest bike time, versus the 5:20:00 of the Belgian. With only four minutes starting the marathon between them, the race was still on.

That would prove to a be a race that the British athlete would win, running a 3:08:20 marathon to cross the line in 9:26:05. Deckers (3:22:28) was a clear second, with Konschak ensuring her points status for Kona in third.

On her win an emotional Lucy Gossage said: “I only entered last minute as I just couldn’t bear to miss out on racing at IRONMAN UK. It is such a special race to me. The UK crowds and support can’t beat any other race.

"Tine is a world class athlete and I knew I had to be on form - you never know what’s going to happen out there but I’m really pleased with my performance. Tine had an amazing race but my course knowledge and home crowd support definitely helped me push through so I could even enjoy the run once I had built enough of a lead.”

The men's title went to Estonia's Kirill Kotsegarov, improving up his third place in 2014. Kotsegarov battled on the run with Germany's Markus Thomschke, a regular in UK races in recent year, before pulling away over the second half of the run to take the title.

“It was fantastic to improve on my 3rd place performance in 2014. That was a very tough bike but I was able run well. The crowds were amazing and a huge help to have their support.”
