Large crowds and great weather for the second Cardiff Triathlon

On Sunday 26th June, a warm and sunny Cardiff contributed to a legendary Welsh summer of sport by hosting only the second ever Cardiff Triathlon. Nearly 1,000 triathletes swam the legendary-waters of Cardiff Bay, cycled incredibly fast closed roads around Cardiff and ran on a picturesque route out to the Cardiff Bay Barrage!

Thousands of spectators and local community members packed into Cardiff Bay to support the event. They were treated to loads of live entertainment, activities and fresh food and drink.

On the racing front, the Olympic race was hotly contested with Richard Ebbage finishing the race with a comfortable gap over second place.

After 1500m of swimming, 40 km on the bike and an epic 10 km run, the Royal Marine emerged victorious as he beat his competitors with an incredible time of 01:50:05. Richard beat Chris Silvery who finished in second place and Alex Thorley, who finished third.

Olympic winner Richard dominated the race, with the fastest times through the swim, bike and run which saw him lead second place Chris by over two minutes by the finish line.

In the female race it was Karen Shimmin who was first home with a brilliant time of 02:08:04. This saw her crowned the Cardiff Triathlon women’s champion.

Karen made up some lost time from the swim leg, to dominate both the cycle and run sections. The Manx Tri Club athlete went on to win the Cardiff Triathlon with a lead of over four minutes ahead of nearest challenger, Lauren Roe.

The Cardiff Triathlon Sprint race saw Mark Weathersby and Jasmine Bowyer emerge as individual winners of the male and female races. Both stormed around the course in fantastic times of 01:06:14 and 01:11:54 respectively.

2016 saw the introduction of a new distance for the Cardiff Triathlon - the Super Sprint. This was a great opportunity for people who wanted to try their hand at a triathlon, but with manageable distances.

The inaugural Super Sprint saw Oscar Rogers and Ceri Crawford emerge victorious. Oscar in particular blitzed the course with a stunning time of 00:33:04. Ceri finished with a still very impressive time of 00:43:00.

The Cardiff Triathlon also saw a few famous faces running for their chosen charities. Ex-Wales and Ospreys legend Shane Williams was the official starter for the race, and he also competed in the Olympic race, finishing with an impressive time of 02:18:38. Television presenter Gethin Jones competed in the Sprint for his own autism charity ‘NAI’, he finished with a time of 01:29:10. Also competing at the triathlon was former ‘Dirty Sanchez’ star Matthew Pritchard who completed the course with his brother Adam, with a time of 02:17:52.

The Super Sprint distance saw some very special entrants this year as well. Rob Jones and his daughter Poppy completed the Super Sprint course with a time of 01:00:04, But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Poppy has cerebral palsy and Rob, with the help of charity Cerebra, used specialist triathlon equipment to complete the Cardiff Triathlon carrying and pulling Poppy with him throughout the swim, bike and run. An incredible achievement, which raised lots of valuable funds for the charity.
