GB Age-Group podium results from Spain: World AG Standard Duathlon Championships

This past weekend your Editor had a few very enjoyable (and long) days in Aviles, Northern Spain, watching and supoorting at the 2016 ITU Duathlon World Championships. Along with the Gold medals of Emma Pallant and Alex Yee in the Elite and Elite Junior races respectively, a typically large Great Britain Age-Group entry was present with approaching 400 athletes racing in the Sprint (5km / 20km / 2.5km) and Standard Distance (10km / 40km / 5km) events. Hopefully many of you enjoyed / have been enjoying our extensive coverage, videos and images on our Facebook and Twitter social media channels.

Here are the 'scores on the doors' wtih respect to British podium finishers in the STANDARD DISTANCE race, where 25 medals were collected.

(For the medal roundup from the Sprint Distance race >>> CLICK HERE).

A few notables...

  • The fastest British female athlete overall was Gill Fullen (Gold, 50-54), who was the second fastest athlete overall in 2:15:57
  • The fastest British male athlete overall was Lee Piercy (Gold, 40-44), who was also the second fastest athlete overall in 1:59:26
  • Elspeth Knott (Gold, 65-69), has now won 13 ITU (World) or ETU (European) Championship Gold medals, and at the Duathlon World Championships her record is now five Gold, two Silver and one Bronze. She has won the World Championships every year, starting in 2010 (Edinburgh) except for 2014 when she was third in Pontevedra.
  • Tasmin Boam (18-19) and Benjamin Hindley (18-19) join Elspeth in also having won the ETU European Championship in Kalkar in April.
  • Having won Gold last year in the Sprint distance (25-29), Claire Steels (recently an ERDINGER Athlete of the Month winner), moved up in age and distance to win Gold in the 30-34 category this time around.
  • Samantha Aplin (Gold, 25-29) has finally won this championship - after finishing fourth in 2012 (Nancy, France), she has won three consecutive Silver medals in Ottawa, Pontevedra and Adelaide respectively. Congratulations on your persistence Sam...!
