The GB Age-Group team in podium form again over the Standard Distance in Lisbon

It's been a very successful three days in Lisbon for the Great Britain team at the 2016 ETU Triathlon European Championships, across all disciplines including Paratriathlon, Elite and Age-Group.

Consistently the dominant squad in Age-Group racing by both volume and medal success, on Friday the team collected 41 medals in the Sprint Distance championship. Sunday was the turn of the Standard Distance athletes - and another 32 medals, including seven Gold, were added to that total.

Full ETU Triathlon European Championships 2016 coverage:

Taking the hounours as the fastest Brits over the 1.5k/40k/10k format in Lisbon were Alice Jenkins and Edward Castro.

As well as taking Gold in the 20-24 category, Alice was the fastest female Age-Group overall - and by some margin. Finishing in a time of 2:07:16, she was more than two minutes faster than anyone else. Over this distance, that is domination. Alice has been in great form this year already, including taking the overall win at the British Age-Group Duathlon Championship / Windsor Duathlon and the BUCS (Student) Standard Distance Championships. A great result, it also means a step up from Silver in the same championship event in Geneva 12 months ago.

In the men's race, Edward almost matched the feat of Alice in being the fastest athlete overall. His finishing time of 1:57:21 left him just nine seconds slower that Italy's Bruno Pasqualini - but it did still mean Gold in M25-29, to add to his Gold last year in the Sprint Distance event. Having won medals in both the Sprint and Standard Distance races at the 2015 World Champs in Chicago, last years British Triathlon Age-Group Athlete of the Year is building an imnpressive triathlon C.V.

Of note... 2000 Sydney Olympic Champion Brigitte Mcmahon (SUI) won the Gold medal in the 45-49 Age-Group in both the Sprint and Olympic distance races... for the third consecutive European Championships. She also did the same at the ITU World Championships in London in 2013. It's not for me to mention, again, her EPO doing positive in 2005 "for therapeutic reasons only" - but we just did. She's fully eligible to race (done the crime, served the time), and, unlike some, I have no issues at all with former Pro athletes continuing to race in the Age-Group ranks (why not?) - but it doesn't mean I have to like seeing a proven doper on the top step of a podium.
