Germany rules in Austria at IRONMAN 70.3 St. Polten 2016

Fourth place for Great Britain’s Susie Cheetham

Winner last year, Andreas Boecherer retained his IRONMAN 70.3 St. Polten title in Austria today. With the leaders out of the opening 1.9km swim, Boecherer used his cycling strength to gain a three-minute lead over Ruedi Wild (SUI) and Paul Reitmayer (AUT) by T2. Wild was able to pull back just over a minute with the best run of the day (1:12:55), but the defending champion still had a comfortable two minute margin at the finish.

The women’s Pro race was a very close battle for the podium positions between Ironman 70.3 Mallorca winner, Laura Philipp (GER), Yvonne Van Vlerken (NED) and Anja Beranek (GER). All three were in a different class today on the bike, with Beranek starting the run with one minute on Van Vlerken and two over Philipp.

10-miles into the run and Philipp had overcome that gap to take the lead, but with Van Vlerken and Beranek less than 100 metres behind. Philipp held strong and was able to pull away for a one minute victory margin, while Van Vlerken used her extensive experience and speed to take second place by just five seconds.

It was a solid, but not spectacular day at the office for Great Britain’s Kona sixth place finisher, Susie Cheetham, today in fourth place.
