Back-to-back victories as Norway's Kristian Blummenfelt takes Cagliari ITU World Cup win

It was a day of debut wins in Cagliari, Italy today. As with the women's event (read about the superb victory of Great Britain's India Lee, HERE), the Cagliari ITU Triathlon World Cup was also a first World Cup win for Norway's Kristian Blummenfelt.

He came into this race in fine form, just seven days ago winning the Madrid ETU European Cup event in Spain with a strong closing 10km run.

Over the Sprint distance this week, the course was a challenging one with a tough climb to be undertaken four times on the bike.

The opening 750m swim was headed out by the familiar sight of France's Aurelian Raphael, but did little to break up the field significantly. The real action, as with the women's race, was on the bike. While India Lee's route to success was solo, there were six men who would break clear and start the run with a 35 second buffer over the bulk of the field, these being Stefan Zachaeus (LUX), Gustav Iden (NOR), Aurelian Raphael (FRA), Simon Vlain (FRA), Tom Richard (FRA) and eventual winner Blummenfelt.

Their efforts were well rewarded, with only Tom Richard (8th) not part of the final six at the finish line. Like Madrid last week, Blummenfelt was very strong on the run to take a healthy 20 second victory, with Raphael a similarly secure buffer over fellow French athlete Vlain.

The British pairing of David Bishop and Morgan Davies were 38th and 48th respectively, and will be looking to improve on those results as the 2016 season progresses.
