A long-standing event on the domestic calendar, Mick Dicker reports from the 2016 edition of the Raw Energy Pursuits Lezyne Steyning Triathlon.

Lezyne Steyning Triathlon - Sunday 1st May 2016
Steyning, West Sussex

Sunshine is glorious, rain is refreshing, wind is bracing, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. Steyning has had them all in its 16 year history but this years’ race was perfect – sunshine and no wind!

The conditions meant that course records could be broken which is what happened in both races. The outstanding performance of the day was from Bethan Male from Brighton Tri Club who set a new course record for the ladies in the Standard Tri with an incredible 1:48:44. Bethan led from start to finish and was 12th overall. Karina Eustace from Team THE was second in 1:53:40 and third was Laura Starmer from Horsham Amphibians in 1:58:21. Peter Younghusband from Petersfield Tri Club has consistently been at the top end of the sport for years and despite his Supervet status showed his racing calibre by winning the Standard in 1:38:36. Dorking’s Dan Cole was second in 1:41:53, pipping Team THE’s Mark Furth in third by two seconds (1:41:55). First Vets were Dominic Paul from Dorking (1:44:06) and Brighton Tri Clubs' Leanne Garner in 1:59:55. The Supervet prizes went to Moyra Amess from Steyning AC (2:06:13) and Brighton Tri Clubs Simon Taylor 1:43:13. In the Relay Tri it was good to see Team Tri Hards win in 1:50:55.

The Sprint Tri was dominated by Team THE where Rob Sherwood set a new course record with 50:10 beating Dave Risebrows' long standing time. The former member of Warwick Triathlon and Road Cycling club has had a good couple of weeks having also set a new course record of 57:36 in REP’s 10 mile Bluebell run the week before. Not to be outdone, THE teammate and ex junior international squash player Rachel Willmott won the Sprint for the third successive year in 58:47. Vanrisch Mclean from Serpentine Running Club was 2nd in 53:08 and Team THE’s Paul Blackmore came in 3rd in 54:35. Jenny Wallace (Brighton Tri Club) and previous winner Mary Campbell (Chichester Westgate Tri Club) were second and third respectively in 59:07 and 1:03:50. Francine Davis from East Grinstead and Farnham Tri’s Michael Rix won the Vets category and Sally Simmonds from Lourdes Triathlon France & Mike Cooper from Chichester Westgate Tri won the Supervets.

Lezyne supplied some great prizes including the smallest and lightest cycling GPS computer available.

REP has introduced a new Team Prize for Clubs competing at their events. Race Director Mick Dicker commented “There are so many clubs supporting our races in large numbers especially in the South East Region that we thought it’d be a good idea to create competition and interest between the clubs. The REP series will be based on four triathlons over the Standard and Sprint distances; Steyning Tri, Arundel Lido Tri 29/5, Arundel Castle Tri 26/6 and the Worthing Tri 28/8 as part of a REP Series.” Scoring will be based on the accumulative time for the four quickest members from each club, whatever gender. The team from Brighton Tri Club won today’s Standard Tri in 7:02:05, second was Horsham Tri Club 7:44:59 and third Tuff Fitty Tri Club in 7:45:15. In the Sprint Tri Team THE were first in 3:44:15, second Brighton Tri Club 4:00:54 and third Chichester Westgate Tri 4:04:13. Trophies will be awarded to the winning clubs after the last triathlon of the season, the ETU qualifier at Worthing. Club members will then benefit from an incentive for the 2017 season.

Raw Energy Pursuits’ next event is the Arundel Lido Triathlon on Sunday 29th May 2016 followed by the Arundel Castle Triathlon in the River Arun on Sunday 26th June 2016.
