Fergus Roberts, Nikki Bartlett win 2016 Scottish Duathlon Championships

The first of the 2016 season Triathlon Scotland Championships took place today, Easter Sunday, at the long-running Stirling Duathlon. With a prize purse of £1400, and £400 for the winners, the Scottish Championship events are always strongly contested.

As well as competing all over Europe and indeed the world, Fraser Cartmell is a regular sight at many of the Scottish Championship events too. We noted previously that in 2014 Fraser won no less than five Scottish Championship titles, over Sprint, Standard and Middle Distance Triathlon, plus Duathlon and Aquathlon. Fraser was back to race in Stirling once again – but would have to settle for the Silver today.

Fergus Roberts (RedVenom.co.uk) made his intentions clear early, his 34:57 first run giving him a T1 buffer of around 90 seconds over Cartmell, Brian Mclellan and Neal Robertson. Roberts then further extended his lead over Cartmell on the bike leg, adding a further 50 seconds (1:04:15 to 1:05:05), though the fastest split of the day (1:03:50) would come from Ewan Taylor, who would go on the take the Bronze medal.

While in no danger from behind with just the final 5km run remaining, Roberts added the fastest run split once again for a clear victor margin. Cartmell pulled clear of the fast riding Taylor to take second place.

The women’s event was also hotly contested, with pre-race favourites Alice Hector and Nikki Bartlett ready to go head-to-head. Hector won earlier this year at the Israman 113 and has also collected several wins in running events locally since then. Bartlett is a fast improving athlete too, having progressed from her unexpected second place overall (as an Age-Group athlete) at Wimbleball in 2014, adding ETU Age-Group Gold later that season in Paguera and now racing as a professional.

Hector took an early lead on the first run, her 39:21 split just over 30 seconds faster than Bartlett. A speedy transition doubled that margin to a one minute lead starting the bike. Bartlett was able to more than overcome that on two wheels however, her winter training focus clearly working well as a 1:08:56 split compared to a 1:12:32 from Hector. Alice would regain a minute through T2 and the final 5km run, but it wasn’t enough, and Bartlett would take the title just over a minute and a half clear of the 2013 World Age-Group Sprint Triathlon Champion. Claire Coey took the Bronze, which included a strong 1:12:00 bike leg.
