IRONMAN World Champion Daniela Ryf collects $1million bonus in Bahrain

It was never in doubt - at least, not from this Editor. As I said in the weekend preview on Friday, of Daniela Ryf's attempt to win the $1million bonus for completing the 'Triple Crown' at IRONMAN 70.3 Bahrain, "... baring unforeseen circumstances or a mechanical, she will".

Ryf has been untouchable over the 70.3 and Ironman distance this year, matching the dominance of Gwen Jorgensen in ITU racing. Her abilities were proven long before today but she still had a pressure that, so far, nobody in the history of our sport has had - win this one race and collect $1million. That she did that in the style that she has done all year - despite a change of format thanks to a cancelled swim - deserves praise. Over nine minutes clear of second placed Caroline Steffen is about as conclusive as it gets. Coming from Switzerland, finding advice on which bank to make the deposit should be quite straightforward...

Sweden's Asa Lundstrom was closest to Ryf on the bike leg, recording a 2:09:18 versus the 2:07:28 of the Swiss champion, but she would lose close on ten minutes over the half marathon which allowed Steffen to make it a one-two for Switzerland. Great Britain took fourth and fifth through Jodie Swallow and Caroline Livesey. For Livesey in particular, they will be very welcome Kona qualifying points for 2016 - along with a $3,000 cheque.

Overshadowed of course by the big money story, the men's race was taken by Uplace-BMC team member Bart Aernouts (BEL). Setting the fastest bike split of the day, he is a highly regarded runner and so would have been confident at T2. Switzerland's Ruedi Wild did reclaim two minutes with the fastest run of the day, but is wasn't enough to prevent the Belgian athlete from collecting the $20,000 first prize.

IRONMAN World Champion Receives One Million U.S. Dollars - Highest Prize Purse in the History of Triathlon

Daniela Ryf has won it all: an IRONMAN® World Championship (2015), an IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championship (2014 and 2015), an IRONMAN European Championship (2015) and an IRONMAN 70.3 European Championship (2014) going undefeated in 2015.

Now the Swiss athlete has added yet another title to her impressive resume: IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Champion and winner of the inaugural “Triple Crown” prize purse of one million U.S. dollars – the highest prize purse in the sport of triathlon.

Ryf won the first race of the “Nasser bin Hamad Triple Crown” series in Dubai in February, followed by a victory at the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Zell am See-Kaprun in August. She then captured the Triple Crown title with a win at the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship Bahrain. The race was shortened to a bike and run event as strong winds made swimming impossible.

“This is an amazing moment in my career and I hope for triathlon. I brought six friends to Bahrain to be with me”, said Ryf, who races for the Bahrain Endurance Team.

She burst onto the IRONMAN scene in 2014 having competed in her first triathlon in 2000. After winning the Swiss Junior Championship four consecutive times from 2003 to 2006, Ryf added her first U23 World Championship title in 2008, qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games. Four years later she was again a member of the Swiss Olympic team.

“I am very thankful that HH Prince Nasser has helped raise the profile of our sport. It has been an amazing year for me. To be honest I have no clue what I will do with all the money. I really need to let this settle a bit,” Ryf added.
