Tri247's Athlete of the Month supported by ERDINGER Alkoholfrei

What a month October was... and what a challenging selection we've had to make in selecting the recipient of our ERDINGER Athlete of the Month for October 2015! With a bucket full of awesome results from the Ironman World Championships in Kona, the World Duathlon Championships in Australia and many more, we've had by far the biggest response of the year - so far at least! - in terms of nominations for worthy winners. A huge thank you to our readers for your interest and time - even if it makes our job even harder!

In truth, selecting a winner for October was actually very easy... the most difficult part is not also being able to select another four or five names who could equally feel it should or could be them. But, as always, we can only select one...

Please do continue to keep you nominations coming in through the year, it really is appreciated and they are all reviewed. Read on to find out this months winner...

2015 Winners so far...

January - Darren Chaplin June - Melissa Dowell
February - Callum Hughes July - Helen Russell
March - Gill Fullen August - Mark Philo
April - Ruth Wilson September - Andrew Greenleaf
May - Sam Wade October - announced below!

This month we have selected a young athlete who is very new to the multisport world - but what an impact she has made, winning not one but two World Championship titles by significant margins. All of this achieved in only her second year of multisport racing since transitioning from Elite long distance swimming. Very impressive indeed - with, one would think, significant scope for further improvement over the coming years. Look out for the name of Lucy Charles...

OCTOBER 2015: LUCY CHARLES

The performance of the British Age-Group entries at the Ironman World Championship in Kona this year was perhaps the best ever. Regarded as the most competitive Age-Group race of the year over any distance, podium positions in Hawaii are very hard to come by. Lucy Charles was racing in her first Kona and took the Gold in the 18-24 Age-Group by almost 29 minutes. The highlight of her day was a swim time of 52:20 - to give that some context, the fastest female Pro, Jodie Swallow, swam 55:04, while the second and third placed overall male Pro's, Andreas Raelert and Timothy O'Donnell swam 52:24. While a super fast swim set up her day, that alone is not enough to win you the race, and Lucy Charles has proven that she is now a triathlete.

Lucy's selection for our October award also reflects Kona seeing her complete a 2015 'double', having also won the 18-24 World Championship at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Zell am-See in August. That is a very impressive double.

Lucy Charles

The rest of the year has also been an exceptional one for Lucy. In winning her Age-Group at Ironman UK in Bolton she improved her time from a year ago by more than an hour and a quarter, while she also won her category at Ironman 70.3 Stafforshire, providing some symmetry there with both a UK and World 70.3/Ironman double. A win at the Grafman Triathlon overall also earned her the Triathlon England Middle Distance Championship title for the year too.

We're delighted to make Lucy Charles our ERDINGER Alkoholfrei AOTM for October 2015. Lucy will also receive these great prizes courtesy of ERDINGER Alkoholfrei:

  • A months supply of ERDINGER Alkoholfrei
  • 1 x ERDINGER Rucksack
  • 1 x Shift Shirt (Training shirt)
  • 1 x Sunvisor
  • 2 x Water Bottles
