Tri247's Athlete of the Month supported by ERDINGER Alkoholfrei

Slightly later than planned, but it was another cracking month and a difficult decision to select our ERDINGER Athlete of the Month for July 2015. Once again we've got plenty of names of athletes that very easily could (or should?!) have won this month... but we can only choose one winner, sorry!

Thank you to our readers for another large selection of emails, nominations, recommendations and suggestions for the AOTM award this month. After highlighting such a wide variety of amazing performances and results, it has been very difficult selecting just one winner, and we suspect we'll be seeing more great performances from many of those who we couldn't choose this time as the season continues - so their time may well come for recognition later in the year!

Please do continue to keep you nominations coming in through the year, it really is appreciated and they are all reviewed . Read on to find out this months winner...

2015 Winners so far...

As mentioned, selecting our ERDINGER Alkoholfrei Athlete of the Month for July has been a difficult task - but we have decided to reward an athlete who not only succeeded in taking on a challenge of epic proportions, but also had to deal with injury from the start... and raised thousands of pounds for charity in the process.

Helen RussellA member of the Great Britain Age-Group team for many years, Helen Russell has collected a fine selection of medals at World and European level over the last five seasons, covering Triathlon, Duathlon and Aquathlon. Her best result was perhaps winning Gold at the 2011 World Duathlon Championships in Gijon.

2015 would look very different however for an athlete used to regularly racing over a variety of multisport formats and distances, as Helen was one of just two women who would be taking on 'Le Tour - One Day Ahead' - riding the entire route and course of the Tour de France, raising money for Cure Leukaemia. That's 21 stages covering 3,300km over three weeks, all done one day in advance of the professional riders.

While the challenge was tough enough, on the first day of riding just 100km in, Helen was involved in a crash which resulted in roadside medical treatment and 10 stiches in her upper thigh. She not only completed that stage, but went on to complete all of the others too.

So far Helen's efforts have raised over £16,000 with the team as a whole securing support of well over £700,000.

Great determination, great character.

We're delighted to make Helen Russell our ERDINGER Alkoholfrei AOTM for July 2015 and congratulate her on her achievement. Melissa will also receive these great prizes courtesy of ERDINGER Alkoholfrei:

  • A months supply of ERDINGER Alkoholfrei
  • 1 x ERDINGER Rucksack
  • 1 x Shift Shirt (Training shirt)
  • 1 x Sunvisor
  • 2 x Water Bottles
