Sam Village and Lucy Gossage win 2015 Monster Middle Triathlon

Liz Heselwood from Monster Racing ( reports from the 2015 Monster Middle and Monster Olympic races which once again attracted a wide range of athletes, including recent Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire and Ironman UK winner Lucy Gossage.

Monster Racing staged their fifth middle distance and their third olympic distance triathlon around Ely on Sunday, 16th August.

In keeping with the past couple of years, these events were long sold out with a great mix of triathletes taking part - from newcomers to the sport to GB age groupers. Monster Racing events are well supported with a generous prize fund from Revitaflex and Zone3. Such support is key for ensuring that a top quality race like this on the UK calendar attracts an elite field, so amongst the lycra clad were some pro triathletes. The start list promised to be a great race to watch with an exciting battle for the podium places and the prizes!

A total of 450 athletes signed up to the events, which promised an iconic swim through Ely in the River Ouse to start, a flat fen bike course and a spectacular run route around the city to the finish line with the magnificent Ely Cathedral in the background. In total the athletes in the middle distance, took on a mile and a quarter swim, 51 mile cycle and 13 mile run, whilst athletes in the olympic event completed just under a mile swim, 26 mile cycle and a 7 and a half mile run. Months of dedication and effort to training saw many athletes achieved personal best times.

Athlete and spectators were treated to a display from a Mark 2 Spitfire thanks to the RAF display team. The Spitfire is the last of its kind that took part in the Battle of Britain.

The Monster Middle sponsored by Revitaflex winner in a time of 3hr 59min 24sec was Sam Village (Sensecore Racing Team), second male was Thomas Burkinshaw, 4:03:25, and third male was Charlie Elliot, 4:04:58 (Ful-on Tri). The female winner was Lucy Gossage (Erdinger Alkoholfrei) in 4:02:38, second female was Lucie Custance, 4:21:57 (Clapham Chasers) and third female was Yvette Grice, 4:26:30 (Bodyworks XTC).

The Monster Olympic sponsored by Revitaflex winner in a time of 2hr 15min 22sec was Richard Peel (Clapham Chasers), second male was Matthew McClure, 2:24:22 (Whizzy Tri Club) and third male was Ben Veich, 2:24:52 (Cambridge Triathlon Club). The female winner was Emma Deary (Stortford Tri) in 2:30:47, second female was Leah Walland, 2:37:12 and third female was Anita Howe, 2:41:04 (Coventry Triathletes).

All athletes were fuelled round the course by Hammer Nutrition and Iceni Water and once finished they all tucked into yummy 9Bars.

The organisers commented: “Monster Racing events are known for their fast well thought our courses and excellent organisation! So much so that the Monster Middle was selected by Triathlon England to be the Eastern Region’s middle distance championship event. The Monster Middle and Olympic sponsored by Revitaflex sold out once again, to ensure you get a place next year the advice is to register early to avoid disappointment. We would like to thank everyone who helped marshal, all competitors, all safety and ‘behind the scenes’ crew as well all our sponsors. Thank you also to Kings School, Ely Cathedral and City and District Council for supporting the event with access to grounds and road closures.”
